SMTP server does not support authentication.

Postby tokenize » Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:57 pm

Hey guys, I was trying to configure my phpBB board with my normal email server but I always end up getting this error:

E-mail error
» EMAIL/SMTP
/bloodforum/adm/index.php

SMTP server does not support authentication.
Backtrace

Connecting to smtpa.vodafone.pt:25
LINE: 848 <- 220 8.mail-out.ovh.net ESMTP

# EHLO web730.90.ha.ovh.net
LINE: 1101 <- 250-8.mail-out.ovh.net

LINE: 1101 <- 250-PIPELINING

LINE: 1101 <- 250-STARTTLS

LINE: 1101 <- 250-8BITMIME

LINE: 1101 <- 250 SIZE 0

Im pretty sure every option is like I use on my email client, but it doesn't work on the board, any trick for this?

Thanks in advance

Take out the username and password. Some SMTP servers are setup to not use authentication from trusted sources.

I changed authentication method to POP-BEFORE-SMTP and at first it worked, I tried to send a mass email and it said it was successful, thing is that I never got the email on the account email I sent it for.
Also now Im not able to send anymore, it reports this error:

Ran into problems sending e-mail at Line 942. Response: 451 qq crashed (#4.3.0)
.
Backtrace

Any clues on what might be wrong?

Ask your web host about this error, it looks like their email server has crashed.
Once it's fixed, test emailing with single notifications first, if they work, but mass emails don't, then your web host is limiting how many emails can be sent at a time. You can edit the "package size" setting under "E-mail settings" to work around this.

Ok, its working now, I mailed only one user, myself, and I never got the email. Also I tried to register a test account and I never got the confirmation email.
What might be wrong? Since the emails are being sent successfully?

by "sent successfully" do you just mean you're not seeing an error when phpBB sends them?

Indeed, it says this:
Information

This message has been sent

With a green background, but I never get this email on my account. And also the activation emails are never getting delivered, I really don't understand why.

What email settings are you using?
Is "Use SMTP" set to yes, or to no.

It's set to yes, I'm using my normal email SMTP, and all options are correct, its a copy from my outlook.

The settings you use in outlook are how to access the SMTP server on your ISP's computer from your own PC.
Most likely, this is NOT the same as what is required to access the SMTP server supplied by your web host from your web server.
Have you tried just setting "Use SMTP" to no, so the PHP mail function on your web server is used instead?

Yes I did try to use the setting to "no", the activation emails would never arrived aswell, and also the mass mail feature would return success and I would never get the email either. I think I'm gonna try to make a gmail account and use the settings I saw here.

choose yes for smtp, then leave all the boxes blank for server, username, password etc.

test.

if it does not work, then put in your username and password

etc.

As I said before I did that already and also didn't work.

Anyways I created a gmail account and it works now, thanks for all the help anyway.

I had the same problem, but solved it by using "POP-BEFORE-SMTP" in "General->E-mail settings->Authentication method for SMTP".
Registration and mass-mailing seem to work so far.
Just in case someone else still has the problem. ;)
