Transfer from one host to another

Post by BigPete7978 »

Ok I have one host and I'm trying to move a copy of my forum of phpbb3 forum to another host. I tried copying it straightforward and I'm now getting an error. Not really sure what I should do. This is the error.

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) [2002]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.

Open 'config.php' in your forum directory, and edit the Database details to match your new ones, make sure you then import the old database/backup of it. What that error is saying is it cannot connect to the database with the user credentials supplied.

The importing of the old database will be done from within phpbb3 itself right?

I'm new to all this. Where do I access the phpMyAdmin. Is that just the admin panel within phpbb3?

Have you imported the database from your old host to new one?

I looked on the thing and it says do it through phpMyAdmin or whatever. I don't know how to do that. I don't even know where to go for that. I've never moved a forums. This is driving me crazy.

How big is your database backup file? (in MB)

I don't know how to back it up. I don't know how to get into that phpmyadmin thing. I did a backup via the phpbb3 admin panel. I don't know if that is what you guys were talking about. It's about 5 MB.

I think maybe you're in a bit over your head with the database issue. Did you install your current forum on your "old host" yourself manually or use a webpanel install tool like fantastico?

PHPMyadmin is a database management tool, a host will usually provide this for you or you can install it yourself.

You used a custom theme right? - Do you have the old files on you? If so upload the old files, that error is saying the style cant be found.

There is another way to solve it, not sure though :/

I've done both manual installs and installs via fantastico. Those are a cakewalk to me because I've learned over time what to do. This is the first time I've transferred hosts. I don't remember ever using phpMyAdmin either. But I could be mistaken.

Yes I have a custom theme. I've tried uploading as is but it doesn't seem to be working. I may delete it and make the default pro/subsilver. Then reupload it later.

Can't I essentially copy all files from the original host via FTP. Then edit the config.php file to contain the necessary information. Then upload to the new host via FTP. I would think that would work, but I could be wrong.

You have to get the database on the new host and that won't do it.

well my current host is lunarpages. They are the ones I'm leaving. I've looked through the cPanel and didn't see the phpMyAdmin stuff. Anyone know if it comes with it? Also if not does it come with something just as capable? Or do I need to intstall it?
