Blank screen when submitting new forum settings in ACP

Post by newbie_niles » Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:05 am

When I hit the submit button on the forum settings page (the one where you can set forum name and description) in the admin control panel, all I get is an empty white screen.

When revisiting the forum settings page, the submitted changes have not taken effect.
(This is troublesome because I do want to change the settings.)

I just updated from 3.0.1 to 3.0.4 by deleting the old files and doing a full update.
It is generally working fine besides this issue.
My language and style (proglass) files are updated to supposedly 3.0.4-friendly versions.
My cache folder is empty except for the index.htm file.

Please go to Information about PHP in the ACP and see what is the value next to memory_limit.

To confirm this issue, can you see the server error log? It is accessible in your hostingCP sometimes, if not, contact your host about any messages in the error log.

The memory limit is 128M in both columns.

I'll see what I can do about checking the error log.

Get a hold of the error log is turning out to be more complicated than expected.

Anyway, mow I am getting another problem as well: I get the white screen also when trying to start a new thread or reply to an existing one. I have been able to make posts before (and after the upgrade), though, so it's making no sense at all to me.

(If it is any help, the forum has felt very slow ever since after the upgrade.)

what host are you using I am getting the same blank screen on posting messages and have not been able to resolve it even after restoring the entire site from a backup. I am wondering if we are using the samne host, and they did something to cause this even though they say they did not. I am using siteground.

I don't think this would be the problem but have you confirmed that your cache/ directory is writable?

Also check your host's FAQs and support. Some hosts allow you to place a .htaccess file like this to enable error logs

Code: Select all

php_flag log_errors on
php_value error_log PATH-TO-LOG-HERE/error.log
We need the error log so we can see where the errors are happening.

No, and this could possibly be related - I recall having some issues with read/write permissions when I first set up the forum, though I don't remember the specifics or how it was solved. When I check the permissions for the folder (through the control panel - apparently I'm using Windows), I see this:

Application pool identity account: may read and execute
Anonymous Web user: may read and execute
Authenticated FTP user: may read, write and execute
(all of these are default settings)

Should I change any of those?

Also check your host's FAQs and support. Some hosts allow you to place a .htaccess file like this to enable error logs

Code: Select all

php_flag log_errors on
php_value error_log PATH-TO-LOG-HERE/error.log
We need the error log so we can see where the errors are happening.
I have a .htaccess file in the forum hosting folder, but it does not contain these lines.
Should I just add those lines and create an empty error-logging folder?

We're using different hosts.

My posting problem was, it seems, caused by the cache folder not being writable. After allowing it to be written (by "anonymous users", to be specific), I could immediately start posting normally again.

My cache folder is now also, obviously, not empty anymore.

The "blank screen upon changing settings in the ACP" issue has also been resolved by making the cache folder writable.
Thanks to everyone for your assistance.
