The actual requirement is described at http://www.phpbb.com/rules/#rule4j

Buit do note the words in that linbk "If for good reason".

If you do not have a good reason, it should be retained in full. We have yet to hear of any 'good reason' which holds water.

I searched for "Powered by phpBB © 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007" and came across this thread. I know it is old but I think that what I have to say is relevant to good reason.

The increase of spam on phpBB forums is terrible and it seems that spammers actually search for the term "Powered by phpBB © 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007" which would be a good reason to change how it is written at least a little or have it in javascript so that spam bot programs cannot find those words.

Just an idea for the phpBB group themselves. Not for the original poster.

Right now my own site host's forums are phpBB3 and are being spammed with porn. Just terrible and the host is getting a bad rep because of the forum he has chosen.

Also if it is a requirement of phpBB why do some hosts which offer phpBB for free don't have the "Powered by phpBB © 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007" at the bottom but just a link? Is a link that gives credit to phpBB enough for them because they pay?

Sorry if my questions are out of line but I am learning as I go along and I might be completely wrong in my understanding. Thanks.

I don't think spam bots use google to search.

The spammers behind the programs do ;)

I just assumed that was how they were able to get away without having it (actually it was mainly a question without the ? looking for verification if that was the case)

Generally there is no support for anyone not retaining the copyright notice and most of the sites that offer hosting plus phpBB auto installs etc. get no support anyway.

While the phpBB Group deserves full credit and respect for their work, it is open source software.
Open source software is software whose source code is published and made available to the public, enabling anyone to copy, modify and redistribute the source code without paying royalties or fees.
Although it seems the official phpbb site will likely refuse any support if they see you have altered the notice.

phpbb.com will indeed refuse to provide any support at all, and will lock any threads where support is asked for where users have removed the phpbb copyright from their site.
