Please describe your problem.
I'd like to upgrade my forum from 3.0.RC4 to 3.0.4. Is it safe for me to use the Automatic Update Package with the mods I have? And if so which version should I use?

I've never updated before. It's a live forum and I'm afraid to ruin it. Any advice is very welcome.

What styles do you currently have installed? Prosilver

What language(s) is your board currently using? English

Which database type/version are you using? MySQL 5

What is your level of experience? Novice

Your best option is to go for completely new files. This will remove any MODS you have installed but as there have been a lot of code changes during development of the RC versions you should update your MODs too anyway.

Get the full package download from the link at the top of this page.
Extract that to your computer.
Upload everything except the config.php file. You might also want to miss out the images folder if you want to keep smilies and ranks.
Then go to yoursite.com/forumfolder/install/database_update.php
Let that run and then delete the install folder.
You are now up to date.

So the Download phpBB 3.0.4 link? Not the Download automatic update package one?

Will that remove my custom BBCodes as well? I need to know whether I should copy them. And what about the data? I'll make a backup of course, but should I do something with it? Or it can just sit there?

The full 3.0.4 download, not the update packages.
Your BBcodes will be fine as they are not MODs.
Your database with all the users and posts will be fine but it's probably worth backing it up before you start just to be sure.
