Topics are just a single unreplied post or a collection of posts, the ability to delete posts also gives you the ability to delete topics. Afaik, there is no "delete topics" permission. :)

So there is no way to let moderators delete posts but not topics?

What difference would it make?
If you can delete all of the posts in a topic, the topic is gone.

Only if there is a single post left in a topic, then deleting the post would make the topic gone; and this (removing the only post left in a topic), too, should have been dependent on delete topic permission (if there was any), not just delete post permission.

Every forum has its own conditions. So a feature you find useless might be vital for them. Looks like I'll again have to hack the code myself. Thanks for the responses though.

Well... suppose you Edited that one remaining post and removed all of its content?
Simply-put, if you created that permission, there would be ways to circumvent it.
