3.01 to 3.05 update

Post by mshawn78 » Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:10 pm

Do I need to UPDATE to each previous version or can I go from 3.01 directly to 3.05? This is a new install using the "Install Central" on my web host. I don't have anything to lose, so what ever it takes to get the latest version up and running!

None, Just used the "Install Central" at Powweb.com webhosting. Similar to Fantastico.

I just tried to use the "automatic update" package and it kept producing errors.

Those autoinstallers/updaters that hosts provide are evil.

Do this
  • Upload all new files from a download of the full version, except for config.php, the /images and /files folders.
  • Go to yoursite.com/forumfolder/install/database_update.php
  • Let that run and then delete the install folder.
  • You now have a new up to date board containing all your users and posts but without any MODs that you might have had installed.

I just popped out here to ask the exact same question - I have version 3.0.1. installed from a Fantastico installation and see that I need to jump to 3.0.5. The forum is new - there are no posts, BUT, I did modify a number of files in the /styles folder, added images, changed the stylesheet, etc.

Should I follow the same instructions provided here - download the full version, not the upgrade version -- and replace everything but the files/folders you suggested? I would presume, however, that I should also not upload/overwrite my /styles/ folder, or I will lose all of the changes to my design. Will it hurt my installation to not upload that folder?

Thanks in advance, and for answering rookie questions.

In the future, please start your own topics. Yes, follow the same advice and yes you will lose the style changes, but 3.0.1 styles will not work in 3.0.5 anyway.

This is why host installers like fantastico are rubbish. They often give you out of date versions.
You would have to update the style manually using the edits in the sticky at the top of the styles forum.

Leaving out the style updates will cause several problems such as a missing registration link.

Sorry about not starting a new topic - I just figured if others were seeking help on upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.0.5 it would be helpful to keep in one place. Won't do it again!

But I have to ask another question now. You say that styles from 3.0.1 will not work in 3.0.5? Does that mean that for those of us who customize the design of forums will have to re-do their work with every release and sub-release? I find that hard to believe?

It depends. But whatever changes are made are evidenced in the changes in the two default styles. Surely you don't suggest that we attempt to keep updates compatible with every custom style out there, known and unknown to us?

Of course not. But I thought that was the beauty of keeping the styles separate from the core files - that upgrades to the core and functionality can be made by phpBB developers, but designers can style templates and CSS files separately, and the two not get in the way of one another. And it seems that to some degree that is the case, to my relief. I just completed the upgrade using the "changed files upgrade" from 3.0.1 to 3.0.5. The style I am using is not one of the two standard styles - it's one I got from the styles database, so obviously those files were not overwritten in the upgrade. My forum is now up and running on the latest version and the custom colors and header are all safe and sound. So I guess I worried for nothing!

Thank you for your quick replies!

Ah, but updates may affect styles as well as core files. Hopefully, though, any updates to styles should be relatively small: and most templates are in fact nearly the same, just a few bits changed in the header and footers.
