Posting Times Out

Postby jbarrick3300 » Sun Oct 18, 2009 11:57 pm

We are having an issue with posting attempts timing out before the post can be completed.

How can we extend the time allotted to typing a post or remove the time restriction?

Currently, under Post Settings, Limit editing time is "0". It says that using zero disables the behavior.

There should no "posting timeout" in phpBB.
The "Limit editing time" setting you are seeing is to prevent a user from editing his post after so-many minutes. There should be no setting that prevents a user from submitting the posting form after a certain time.

What type of error message are you seeing?

Absolutely there should be none. However, after about 45 seconds, posters are experiencing time out errors.

It seems you are mistaking "Limit editing time" with "Flood interval"

Limit editing time:
Limits the time available to edit a new post. Setting the value to 0 disables this behaviour.

Flood interval:
Number of seconds a user must wait between posting new messages. To enable users to ignore this alter their permissions.

Since the setting of 0 (zero) seems to not help, I made the setting 1000 minutes. That also does not help the situation.

Clearly something is causing these posts to time out.

I really could use some help here.

No I am not confusing them.

"Limit edit time" keeps a user from editing a post after a certain time interval. Once the user has submitted the post, they cannot change that post after the time interval has passed.

"Flood interval" prevents the user from submitting the post form twice within too short of a time. It is to prevent them from double-posting, or quickly flooding your forum with junk-posts.

Neither of those would prevent a user from submitting the post form after time has passed.

Once again, what error are your users seeing?

Here is the error that people are getting:

Your request timed out. Please retry the request

This is happening with most functions on the forum (posting, viewing, save...)

That has nothing to do with timeouts in phpBB software. It is your webbrowser timing out because a page is not returned. If your website's errorlog does not show any errors, then it might be your host's mod_security blocking various words in your post.

the bottom line is that it is not a phpbb error message.

it does not occur anywhere in any phpbb file that I can find.

therefore, it is a server error message.

try to contact your host about this.

Same here. This problem began only after upgrading phpBB.

I have another server with the same hosts and this problem is not happening on that one, that I know of.

It seems like a compatibility issue. But how do we resolve it?

I am running the new 3.07 and it was working perfectly, but suddenly today I am getting that error. I am okay if I post a response in about 30 seconds, but more than that I get the error.

I have noticed that if I refresh the screen it seems to post to the board. If you click the back button, it is lost.

the fact still remains that phpbb can not show that error message because it does not exist in the scripts anywhere.

now, upgrading phpbb may be why you now get the error when you didn't before. ( I doubt it ).
however, it is much more likely that it is something that your host has done that is causing this.

as BRF said earlier, it is most likely they have installed or updated their mod_security software and it is causing this for some reason. the error is most likely a browser generated message because of whatever the host problem is.

I have the same problem after update from 304 to 309.
http://dumpsterdiversparadise.com/home.html

It only happens when using Internet explorer under 2 minutes post will be posted

after 2 minutes (Your request timed out. Please retry the request. )

Firefox works fine.

So it would seem not to be a host problem, as it works with firefox

But a problem with Internet explore

using IE after ("Your request timed out. Please retry the request) error

instead of hitting the back button , right click then click refresh then retry

This seems to be a problem with IE and not firefox
