Hello ric323,
yes, I know.

But we are talking about the possiblity to program a CAPTCHA plugin for it. I think this is not possible.

You could use the CAPTCHA plugin framework for such a check.

Hello iWisdom,
are you really sure that this plugin could make the job one step before other visual confirmation and Q&A plugins will do it?
I will wait for an answer from the developement team.

This would be far better suited for MOD writer's discussion, but let's examine your concerns.

Your primary concern seems to be that a plugin would be unable to stop the registration attempt before the form is submitted. Here my question would be why that would be important; rejecting the registration on submission seems fine to me. Moreover, a plugin could trigger an error in its init phase, stopping the display of the registration form.

Furthermore, the API sends all entered information to the plugin on validation; username, email, etc for registration; post text, guest username etc for posting and the user row on login. It should be entirely possible to use that information for services like akismet.

Hello Kellanved,
the reason is that the phpBB3 default DNSBL check is doing it this way. ;)

The Akismet thing looks good. I took a look last minutes. I haven't known it before. But I'm not sure if it would have the same result like the Advanced Block MOD is having it.

Just to remind: We are talking about fighting against human spammers. Are the visual and Q&A confirmation CAPTCHA catching them? I don't think so.

Well, they are called "CAPTCHA plugins", but in the end it is just a framework to add code to the registration (and posting, login) without altering any files. That code can render a CAPTCHA, but it could just as well check a blacklist (or combine a CAPTCHA with a blacklist).

Hello Kellanved,
and the phpBB3 default DNSBL check is working one step before, or not?

Hello iWsdom,
and then you have a bader solution as before. And it will need more performance as before.

Okay, nobody wants to answer my questions. Enough of off-topic now.

Personally, I would recommend going through the list in the first topic and deciding which works best for your needs. Generally speaking, the Q&A CAPTCHA plugin will work well if your board is catered to a particular audience with some sort of common knowledge that isn't generally known otherwise; if that's not the case reCAPTCHA or similar may work well. You may also have luck with (or simply prefer) one of the CAPTCHA plugins created by the MOD community.

It doesn't even have to be very obscure knowledge. MOst SPAM is created by SPAMbots. They are dumb.
So long as you don't use a question that that many others will also use, and so long as your board isn't big enough that the SPAMbot author will take the time to peronsally analyse your board, even simple questions will do.

It can even be as simple as "Are you a spammer? (Yes/No)" ;)

That makes the Q&A CAPTCHA behave like a similar required custom profile field.
