Block Users Under the age of 13

Post by lachlan438 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 7:08 am

I don't feel like going though all the paper work ect or having stuff faxed/mailed to me, is there anyway I can just block the users that are under 13?

As you are not in the US, I don't think you need to worry about all that.
Just set "Enable COPPA" to "No" on the "User Registrations Settings" page.

My host TOS states that I must comply with all US laws and regulations as that's where they are hosted. :(

If you have no content directed at persons under 13, COPPA does not apply to you.

All right thanks PHPBB should look at putting in an age limit feature.

Not that easy... they'll just lie and not much chance of checking ID. ;)

Why is that, exactly? If you have no content aimed at children under 13, COPPA does not apply so the age of registrants is irrelevant. If you do have such material and COPPA otherwise applies, you WANT registrants under 13 and you must comply with COPPA.

and like it was said, there is absolutely no way to validate someon's age. the whole COPPA thing in this software is rediculous because it is just a choice of "over" or "under" 13. I bet that virtually 0 kids 13 or younger would ever click the "under" link so what is the point other than compliance with the US law?

Guys settle, first off if you have asked and they lied then your legal free so long as you don't know that they lied. Second your right I don't need it and finally it would be nice if phpbb3 had that feature because lets face it while I love phpbb3 I did consider changing to mybb becuse of features however I stuck it out with phpbb3 becuse I love you guys the forums are great and I know lots about pro sliver plus I have been using you for the last 3 years we have history :D

But why not add age restrictions? if a webmaster wants it.

Anyway I'm off I found out want I wanted Very quickly thank you all for your responses.

you could put a "wording" on your site ;)

suggested:
I would like to clarify our policy on the use of the YOURSITE.com forum by young persons.

The YOURSITE.com forum is intended for use by persons aged 16 years and above. Persons under that age may participate, subject to the conditions set out below.
  1. By using this forum, you are assumed to have read and agreed to these conditions. If you are under age, and do not agree to these conditions, you must cease using the forum immediately.
  2. On registering, a user who is under age must contact the Host or any Moderator to confirm their age.
  3. The user agrees that they will immediately make a parent or guardian aware that they have registered with YOURSITE.com, and a parent or guardian should confirm to a Moderator that they are content for the user to participate. This confirmation must include a contact name and telephone number for the parent or guardian. The contact information will not typically be used unless we are uncomfortable with the details provided.
  4. The user may not display any private e-mail address, website or MSN identity on the YOURSITE.com forum.
  5. The forum's Personal Messenger ("PM") and email features will be disabled for under-aged users.
  6. The user is not permitted to have any "offline" contact with any other forum user through the YOURSITE.com forum. Any attempt or invitation to engage in such activity must be reported to a Moderator immediately.
  7. Anyone found acting contrary to the above will be suspended from the Forum indefinitely.
You can see a list of moderators [insert YOURSITE.com mods list] here. Moderators should only be contacted via email (use the link in any moderator's profile) - do not post this information in open forum, it kind of defeats the object

Any questions or concerns about this policy, please feel free to email / PM me or any of the moderators.
that message went on to Police Specials FIVE YEARS AGO and I have ruthlessly copied it to my forums ever since :P

I think it is quite easy to achieve what is requested by modifying the text for the "buttons" on the registration page.

Open /language/en/ucp.php

Find

Code: Select all

'AGREE' => 'I agree to these terms',
Replace by

Code: Select all

'AGREE' => 'I agree to these terms and am older than 13',
Find

Code: Select all

'NOT_AGREE' => 'I do not agree to these terms',
Replace by

Code: Select all

'NOT_AGREE' => 'I do not agree to these terms or am younger than 13',

It still doesn't stop anybody lying about their age though :?

As this is the question, my answer would be to modify the text on the buttons on the registration page.

It is obvious that it doesn't stop lying.

Exactly my point, and this doesn't hold water either:

As ignorance cannot be used as an excuse in a court of law.

Just stating what I think, same as parental control, it doesn't work.
