Open for guests

Post by GenderBender » Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:57 pm

Hi,
My forum only allows access after registration, however I want one particular forum open for public. So I changed the permissions and added 'guests' to that one forum. But if I log out it doesn't appear. Did I miss a step?

You need to do

permissions
groups forum permissions
guests
the forum
read only (or whatever access you want).

Then also make sure the anonymous account is in that guest group.

manage users
anonymous
choose groups from the drop list on the right.
That account must be in the guest group and no other.

Hi Kevin,

thanks so much for this clear explanation! I did exactly what you said but in my forum there was no 'guest' group in the drop down list. Do you know how to add it?

It's a default group that cannot be deleted. You must have it.

If it's already in that group it will not be on the list for adding and it will say the group name on the left.

LOL you're right, I was going to edit my post but you beat me to it...

So I changed it to exactly what you said and logged out of the forum. There is one forum public and it has a testmessage, but if I log out no forums are visible. Obviously I forgot to change something else?

Hmm...
Want to PM me an admin login and I'll check.
That should all be ok.

You hadn't done this bit

I just logged in and all the forums were marked as no role assigned for the guest group.
I just set the first Welcome forum to read only and submitted. This is now showing for guests.

Oh I forgot to change your language back to Dutch in the user control panel :)

I probably misunderstood. Should the Welcome forum be visible for people that don't have a login? In other words if I log out should I not see that one particular forum? Cause if I log out, no forums appear.

If you logout, you can now only see the welcome forums.

If you want others to appear as well, do the same steps for those forums too.

Ahahahaha, I'm sorry, I didn't tell you I have two forums, I was referring to the other forum but that's okay, I'll make the changes. I apologize, I should have been more clear! Thanks!

You didn't Pm me the link for the site so I found it in your old posts :)
That didn't have any forums for the guests either. But hopefully you can work out what to do now.

I'm sorry but I can't make the changes on the other forum. I will send you the link and a login. Can you please see what is wrong?

Done.

You had the permission on the forum right but the category it was in was deny the guests access.

I just set the permission for the category too and then the forum popped up.
