Post by _Chris_ » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:02 am

When do the newly registered users become registered users ? What do the others here set for the options for newly registered users please ?

When they reach a by the admin given in amount of posts (which is by default 3) they will be moved out of the Newly Registered Users group and have all permissions "normal" Registered Users have. :)

Thanks Jim. I guess that the others here set things so that the newly registered guests can only post and nothing else - is that about right ?

The default permissions stop them from using PMs and making posts without them requiring approval (and a couple of other things). Basically it means that if anyone beats your registration antispam measures they can't run riot and it also means you have a little control over new posters. 3 is usually enough to suss out that they're genuine. You can also use it to hide certain forums until they reach a post total. For instance I have a buy/sell forum which they can't see until they get to 5 (I only use it for that, not approved posting) so I don't get people signing up just to spam ads and leave.

Thanks Kevin, it's good to have some safegauards. Good idea about the protection on the for sale / wanted forums - I'll do that as well. One other thing, and in relation to spammers, is there any way of me getting an alert by email when someone has made their first post on any of the forums please ?

Not that I can think of.
You can see the queued posts on the index page though as the forum containing it will have a ? on the far right.

Thanks - when you say queued, do the posts from newly registered users not get posted until I approve them ?

Brilliant, but would I need to keep going to the forum to see this ?

Yes.

Queued posts are shown in 3 places.
The index, the forum and the moderator control panel.
But apart from the ? icon you're not alerted in any way they they are there.

That could be a problem Kevin, there's no mods at the moment, and some days when I'm travelling abroad, it could be a couple of days in between me seeing the board.

Can always turn if off until you find you need it.
You need members first.

You can turn off the newly registered users group or you can turn off the requirement for post approval (in the groups forum permissions > newly reg users group> the forums> advanced>misc)

Thanks Kevin, I'll keep it on, the spammers may just have to wait a couple of days before I can deny their posts :D But seriously, hope to have a couple of mods next week, so not a major problem.

Kevin, I'm having a problem finding my way around the ACP at the moment, for example, I want to change the posts for newly registered posts to 2 and I've been searching aimlessly around for it ? Is there like a big index page of all the different options available to me please ? then clicking on that particular option title takes me straight to the page where it actually is ?
