I've been trying, for about a week, to turn off automatic "watch topic".
Everytime a user posts in a topic, the user is stuck with getting tons of emails because he has been automatically labeled as watching the topic. Even if they stop "watching" the topic, as soon as they post again, they are labeled as "watching" it again and their inbox gets filled with emails again.
Same thing happens to every user, admins, mods, members.
I've been looking around the options, everywhere, but it seems like I missed something.

Similar problem here (with latest phpBB version). A moderator got 8 notifications at once and at the moment my users complain that they don't get any notification at all.
Each user has control themself if they are automatically subscribed to topics they post in.
If you are receiving multiple notifications for the same post, that is a setup problem on the web server, and you would need to speak to the people who supply your free board, as you don't have access to your board files. http://help.forumotion.com/

Then I will have to speak with myself because unfortunately I am the server admin (not of forumotion.com). But it's good to know that there is no bug in phpBB itself (at least regarding the problem of this topic).
I was answering "Deeder", who IS on forumotion.
On your board, make sure the web server has FULL permissions to the ./cache folder
