Memebers not getting activation email, and I tried...

Post by Sudburymusic »

Good evening:
I've tried many times to register as a regular member, and I have no received the activation email. I tried search for this problem on the forum, but I had no luck when I did what was told such as set the email package size to 0. Any help? Thanks.

Are you testing registration on your forum, or are you registering on someone else's forum?

If you go to the Admin Control Panel > Maintenance > Error log, are there any SMTP errors there?

This may help as well: Regitsration Account Activation Key

I tried the 0 thing, and board-wide emails are enabled. I'm not sure how to set up the SMTP thing? And I tried many things regarding that as well. Such as setting it to localhost and using my admin name and pass.

Your host doesn't allow fsockopen, which is required by phpBB to send activation emails. You will have to either ask your host or use something else.

Well, that's rather odd. If they have an autoinstaller for PHP 3.07 and Wordpress, then why would they not have that? I emailed my webhost. We will see what happens.

I came across this post when I Googled the same issue with no real results.

For me it was on my private server so I have full control.
Anyway, I had tried all mail connection types with nothing working with the same types of errors posted above
Could not connect to smtp host : 111 : Connection refused

<b>[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice</b>: in file <b>/includes/functions_messenger.php</b> on line <b>923</b>: <b>fsockopen() [<a href='function.fsockopen'>function.fsockopen</a>]: unable to connect to localhost:25 (Connection refused)</b><br />
So I then tested to make sure fsockopen was available on the server and it was so that marked that off the issue list.
You can check this by simple making a test file say test.php

Code: Select all

if(function_exists('fsockopen'))
{
    echo "fsockopen exists and is avalible";
}
else
{
    echo "fsockopen is not enabled";
}
Then upload and load the file in your browser.
Delete after the test.

So that lead me to checking the PHP configuration for errors, which there were some.

There were double instances of 2 modules and also an illegal comment using # which should be a ;

I'm not sure how this happened, but fixing them fixed the mail issue.

So for future reference if all else fails and you have access check the php.ini for errors
