phpBB3 database usage

Post by Prizem »

Hello,

Does phpBB3 use less database resources than phpBB2? I run some phpBB2 forums on my site and they've been going fine for a while, but now my host is saying they are consuming "dangerous levels" of database resources. I have a shared account and one of my forums has a little over 1k users with 40 on during the day. They said if I want to keep my forum, I have to either optimize my forum or upgrade to VPS.

Yes, it uses fewer resources.

This is a classic attempt to get more money from you. Ask them for a copy of every log showing this usage and tell them you are going to show the logs to phpbb support.

Thanks for the information. This is what my host said:
Please find the information listed below that you have requested. This first list is the average daily CPU utilization that your account has used for the past 2 weeks. At 100%, your account would be using one whole CPU on the server. This was either met or exceeded quite a few times during the two week block have listed. The server you are located on is a dual processor system with a low customer population, so this would mean that you are taking up at least half of the servers CPU resources at times.

2010 Apr 21: user 50%

The second part is a breakdown of what the top processes were on your site for those days the CPU was high:

User: user CPU: 116.186% Memory: 2.24349245063878 MySQL: 0.128885017421598

And finally, while I do see that you have a robots.txt file in place to block bots and crawlers from indexing parts of your site, I see that there are still entries in your access logs which show that the forums are being hit by them. Examples in the logs are below:

You may need to make adjustments to this file in order to prevent the dynamic portions of your site from being indexed and causing resource issues.
