3.0.6 forum - major issue

Post by James Blonde » Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:57 am

Hi,

I'm a forum admin on a 3.0.6 forum. Over the last few days, we've had a major issue where large numbers users, moderators and our other admin have been banned from the site for no reason, and with no input from anyone. It appears now that anyone who stayed logged in is generally OK, but on logging out, users become automatically banned.

It appears to occur across all browsers, and there is no pattern to how it happens - users may get in on some systems, but not on others.

There is nothing on the Admin Control Panel to suggest there is a problem, and I don't have database admin access to the back end, so can't do anything other than whats available on the ACP.

I can't get in touch with the site admin / owner.

Any suggestions??? Really would appreciate some advice!!

Do you have FTP access to the files? Are you able to do database backups in the ACP?

What is the exact message users get when trying to login?

I don't have FTP access, but I do have access to do backups, however there appear to be no previous backups to restore.

I'm waiting on info on what the ban message is, and I'll let you know. Obviously I don't want to log out myself! :P

Do a backup of just the banlist table, save it on your computer, and attach the file here.

Also, can you confirm that nothing shows in any of the three ban types in ACP, Users and groups, User security?

Please see attached banlist.sql.txt

edit: My bad, there are banned usernames, ip addresses and emails - mostly all spammers, and none added in the last few days when this problem has become apparent.

Actually, hold that thought. User : Anonymous was banned on the 8th by one of the mods. Please tell me thats not a reserved name or something???

OK, here's the problem. On June 8th, someone banned the Anonymous user. The Anonymous user has the user_id of 1 and is the account used for all guests and members before they login. With the Anonymous user banned, no one can log in.

Go to the ACP, Users and groups, User security, Ban usernames, Un-ban or un-exclude usernames. On the list of banned users, you will find Anonymous. Select that name and Submit.

Backup the banlist table again and attach it and I can tell if you were successful.

Also, your methods of banning are very ad hoc and not very effective. I recommend you update to version 3.0.7-PL1 and use the Q&A CAPTCHA to prevent bots from ever registering.

Have that user clear his browser's cookies. If that doesn't work, please post the user_id.
