High server load

Post by Nrby »

I apologize but I was forced to suspend the "/home/nrby09/public_html/viewforum.php" and "/home/nrby09/public_html/viewtopic.php" scripts as it was causing a high load on the server, and due to the nature of the problem, I was forced to take immediate action for the health of the server. Unfortunately I do not have any specific recommendations for these scripts, however, in general, adding some sort of caching mechanism, where the script does not need to generate a new page with every request, helps to lower the over load that a script will cause. Likely the original author or support group of the software that you are using will be able to help you to understand how to add something of this nature.
this is the message I got from my host ... so basically my forum is dead at the moment ... and ideas what I can modify in those 2 scripts to avoid this happening ?

An unmodified phpBB board shouldn't be causing an excessive load.
To tell us about your board, please fill out the Support Request Template and post the result back here.

Out of curiosity, is tehre any further action on this?

My website got the same thing. I was running 3.0.7-PL1 (?) and was told viewtopic.php is an offending page.

I then upgraded to 3.0.8 and was told an hour later the same issue.

The site is almost ten years old and this is fairly new.

The hos - godaddy - pointed me to a thread that had some "fixes" but they were from the 2.x days.

Okay, done.

I'm using hostgator currently.

I might want to look at switching. I've been fine with HG for several years, but this is annoying.

you said above that you were using godaddy, now you say you are using hostgator.

godaddy has a bad rep for things like this, hostgator does not. I would contact hostgator support, ask for a level two support rep and explain that the board has been around for a long time and this is new.
Then ask them to tell you exactly what the problem is and how to fix it. After all, it is their servers and you are paying them for it and for support.

luck,
robert

Sorry for the confusion. I'm using godaddy for domain registration and hostgator for hosting.

The site has been up for almost a day now. We'll see how it goes.

I think he means "up" as in "it hasn't gone down in the last 24 hours" ;)
