Restrict new threads but allow new replies

Post by akhileshbc » Fri Aug 06, 2010 3:30 pm

Hi... I want to restrict users from creating new topics in my subforum. So, I locked the topic. But I want to allow replying to the topic that are already created on the forum.

How can I do this ?

Thank you...:)

In Forum Permissions for that forum, edit the permissions for the Registered Users usergroup.
Go into Advanced permissions and set "Can start new topic" to No.

What's the difference between NO and NEVER ?

Post by akhileshbc » Fri Aug 06, 2010 3:41 pm

When I tried setting permission to a user group, there's three options: YES, NO, and NEVER.

But what's the difference between the last two ?

Thanks in advance...:)

Make sure your Administrator group, or whatever groups you want to make new topics, have regular Forum Permissions for that forum.

"No" means that group is not given the permission.
"Never" means that group is blocked from having the permission.

Yeah... I checked that... Admin has full access.

I have used "Never" instead of "No". Was that causing the problem ?

I have used "Never" for the "Registered Users" for "Start a new topic".

Since you are also a member of Registered Users, setting that to "Never" would block you from that permission. That is why I told you to set it "No".

I wonder how to do it via coding dynamically, set permit or deny a user post a topic in a specific forum by checking certatin condition? shall I target to viewtopic.php to put this code only or else?
Thanks for any tips/hints in advance,
Hunt Chang

I think you should start a new thread regarding this.

Since the issue that made me to create this thread is resolved, most of the other guys might not check this thread anymore.

So, inorder to obtain more replies from the techs, create a new thread.

Good luck.. :D
