[Split from] "Mark forums read" doesn't work

Post by devnulljp »

I have the same issue -- should I make a support request or just piggyback on this one?
Basically, clicking Mark Forums Read adds &mark=forums to the URL, then it refreshes to the index page but nothing is marked read ... unless you immediately log out and then back in again. So, I'm guessing it's a cache refresh thing maybe?

You should never piggyback on someone's support topic. Always create your own. That said, I've split your post to it's own topic.

What does "Nothing is marked read" mean? How do you know it is not marked read?

Good point -- when logged in, if you click 'View new posts' obviously it shows you unread posts. clicking Mark Forums read should mark everything as read, so clicking 'View new posts' should show no new posts -- everything's been read. But it doesn't -- clicking View new posts shows all the same unread posts as before, unless you immediately log out after clicking 'Mark forums read' then it behaves as I'd expect it (View new posts shows nothing).

Sorry so convoluted.
1. Log in
2. Click View New Posts --> shows a bunch of unread posts
3. Click mark forums read
4. Click View New Posts --> still shows the same bunch of unread posts
5. Click mark forums read, then logout and log back in again.
6. Click View New Posts --> 'No suitable matches were found' as expected

Any ideas?
Something's not refreshing or updating until you log out -- could it be a cookies thing? Or server side in the database?

Thanks

No.

"New" is not the same as "Unread".
"New Posts" is showing you all of the topics that have been posted to since your last login. If you want to see the Unread posts, you should click "View Unread posts".

Alright. Doesn't change the issue though, just the wording. Any ideas?

1. Log in
2. Click View New Posts --> shows a bunch of new posts
3. Click mark forums read
4. Click View New Posts --> still shows the same bunch of new posts
5. Click mark forums read, then logout and log back in again.
6. Click View New Posts --> 'No suitable matches were found' as expected

Thanks

I do not see an issue.
Clicking "Mark forums read" is not supposed to reset "New posts".

"New posts" is NOT the same as "Unread posts".

Really? But there is a difference between

Click mark forums read / Click View New Posts
and
Click mark forums read, then logout and log back in again / Click View New Posts

What is mark forums read supposed to do then? What's the point if it doesn't actually do anything (unless you log out)?

As I already said several times
Brf wrote:"New Posts" is showing you all of the topics that have been posted to since your last login
devnulljp wrote:logout and log back in again / Click View New Posts
Therefore, there would be no "New Posts", because you just logged out and back in.

To see "Unread" posts, you would click the "View Unread Posts" link, not the "New Posts" link.

Marking posts as "Read" removes the color coding in the icons for each forum and topic and resets the "View latest unread post" icon in each topic that has been posted to since your last reset. It has nothing to do with "New posts".

Hmmm...OK, I see the difference now, thanks.
I don't have a "View Unread Posts" link, only a "View New Posts" link ... I'll dig through the mods. Cheers.
