Slow Forum

Post by Stingray1963 » Sat Nov 06, 2010 12:58 pm

Hi everybody,

as I do not get any support in the German phpBB forum, I try it here

I am running the forum on a pretty fast managed server (my "own" server), however it is getting slower and slower. I have around 500.000 post and 20.000 topics right now

There was an issue with the allowed maximum connections, but this has been resolved by the hosting company.

I have ongoing problems that the forum is getting very slow once there are about 30-40 users online at the same time. But even with less users online, index site has always 3-4 seconds load time. When I activate the debug mode it shows this for the index site:

-Do I need to set more indexes in the php_forums table (or another table) because it is using "filesort" ?
-What else could I do?
-Does it makes a large difference for the speed that the tracking for read/unread posts is currently saved in the database then in the cookie (setting in admin / serverload ) ?

Many thanks in advance
Oliver

Support for phpBB2 has ended. Any support requests regarding phpBB2 are limited to help with conversion to phpBB3.

Information on how to convert from phpBB2 to phpBB3 is here.

Basically, you must have both phpBB2 and phpBB3 installed on the same server. After you have finished installing phpBB3 you will have the option to convert your phpBB2 board using the built in converter. The information it asks you for is related to the phpBB2 installation and can be found in its config.php file on the server. All of your users, posts, forums, PMs etc are converted. However, styles and MODs are not (with the exception of the birthday and attachment MODs which are supported by the converter). The phpBB2 database is not converted per se, it is merely read and converted/moved to the new phpBB3 database, so if it goes wrong your old board will not be affected at all. At the end of the conversion, once you're happy it's all working, your phpBB2 database and files can be backed up and removed if you so wish. They are not connected to the new installation in any way.

Everybody can see the load time in the footer of the page. What times do you have?

Could you please review also my questions in the first post?

I'm showing
Time : 3.930s
on initial loading of the index page, everything else loads in the one second range.
I have no suggestions, but if you will check back I'm sure some suggestions will be made.

What is the server load like when it's loading slow?

I've just tried accessing your site, and it took:

Time : 4.004s | 18 Queries | GZIP : On

Have you tried it with GZIP off to see if that makes a difference?

seems to make no differes for the index page. well, other pages (especially "show news posts") are not affected. they are quick

but the main problem are horrible response times once 30-40 users are online at the same time...
