The weird thing is i was able to update 2/3 boards on the 3 sites i run. But then on the last board i got this problem.

My next question is can i change the name of my install folder until i figure this out so my users can continue using the board? Or will this cause major problems.

What does your server error log say? This should point you to the problem.

1and1 doesn't provide an error log.

1and1 has this but don't know where to put it:

Code: Select all

Creating own error logs for debugging PHP scripts.

Since we don't provide access to Apache error logs on shared hosting packages for
technical reasons, you can create your own error logs for debugging PHP Scripts.

Please insert the following code in your PHP script (or create separate file and
and add the code in it. Include the file using "include()")

   error_reporting(0);
   $old_error_handler = set_error_handler("userErrorHandler");

   function userErrorHandler ($errno, $errmsg, $filename, $linenum,  $vars)
   {
     $time=date("d M Y H:i:s");
     // Get the error type from the error number
     $errortype = array (1    => "Error",
                         2    => "Warning",
                         4    => "Parsing Error",
                         8    => "Notice",
                         16   => "Core Error",
                         32   => "Core Warning",
                         64   => "Compile Error",
                         128  => "Compile Warning",
                         256  => "User Error",
                         512  => "User Warning",
                         1024 => "User Notice");
      $errlevel=$errortype[$errno];

      //Write error to log file (CSV format)
      $errfile=fopen("errors.csv","a");
      fputs($errfile,"\"$time\",\"$filename:
      $linenum\",\"($errlevel) $errmsg\"\r\n");
      fclose($errfile);

      if($errno!=2 && $errno!=8) {
         //Terminate script if fatal error
         die("A fatal error has occurred. Script execution has been aborted");
      }
   }

1and1 is just a bad host all around. I used 1and1 for many years and recently got fed up and switched away to Bluehost.

The 500 errors became a real pain and were often caused by nothing on particular. Not sure we can help with this one, unfortunately.

Yup, the board should work fine as before. You should manually apply the security fix mentioned here: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... #p12899712

Awesome thanks guys for all the help. I believe it has something to do with the PHP refresh rate. 1and1 has it set to 40 MS. and i think phpbb3 with a big board needs to be higher. research from the forums, shows even 50MS is still not enough.

I had this exact problem when trying to update on 1and1.com

Last year, installed new 3.07-PL1, no problems.
Tried to update to 3.08, "Error 500" after the 50 files checked screen.

Tried editing the .htaccess file, no workee.

It worked for me after replacing the \includes\functions.php 3.07 version file with the 3.08 version before the automatic upgrade.

After that, the "Check Files" step worked fine and correctly identified that functions.php was already updated and the update completed successfully.
