If I have my forums set to where you cannot view them without a username and password - does this make the site secure? or is there a "backdoor" someone could use to steal the information from my site?

Setting password protection for your forum will certainly help its security. However, you should have in mind that each visitor will be asked to enter a username and password before they are allowed to visit the forum.

This is fine for a private forum, but if you want anyone (including search bots) to be able to view your forum, you should avoid password protecting it.
