You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts

Post by panhead »

Some members (and myself) get the following error when logging in:

You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts

This happens directly when logging in for the first time, the setting is that it should occur after entering 3 times the wrong login/password. Are hackers trying to login?

Guests can only view some (sub)forums, should I worry or what can I do about it?

As long as you keep the maximum login attempts feature working, they will eventually give up and go away.

My forum members have experienced a sudden increase in this message. Like, they went from never seeing it to all the sudden a couple days ago they all see it every time they try to log in for the first time.

And then I came here to post a topic about it, and phpbb.com had me fill in a capcha because I'd exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts! I haven't logged in for a while.

This makes me think there's some kind of widespread phpbb attack thing going on, lots of bots trying lots of times to log in as anyone.

This has just started happening to me as well.

It does sound like some sort of new bot...

so, what's the solution? It's happening to my forum as well.

Could it be a bug? Maybe there is a fix and this is not an attack?

well if it's a bug it's not a new bug, because I was running 3.0.5 when my users started getting it last week. Upgraded to 3.0.8 to see if that'd fix it and it doesn't.

my users made a big deal about it because they're usually pretty drunk or high and that makes captcha tough, ya know.

Getting this a lot recently on our board as well. Did the upgrade from 3.0.7 to 3.0.8 also to see if it would solve it, and no it didn't either.

Also just got it happening on this forum when I tried to log in to reply to this thread.

We are aware of this (related topic).

another thing annoying me...

In the last three days, my forum index page has had about 600 hits.

The login page has had 11,000!

I guess there's nothing I can do about just hits, I'm just frustrated. The bandwidth annoys me.
