Adding a favicon is not working for me.

Post by emcha »

Idon't know why, but I'm feeling like a tool with posting all these bugs and questions that keeps happening to me :?

Using this http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/adding-a-favicon/ I've been trying to upload the favicon to the home/emcha/public_html as it is there that my config.php is. But after adding the line that is provided in the tutorial(?) changing the url to my site url as it requestiong and yourfolder to the home/emcha/public_html/ which is where my icon is, saving and refreshing the style. The icon is not appearing.

Any clue?

Your favicon shows for me.
You have made the edit incorrectly and should just remove it. No editing is required as a favicon placed in the website root directory or the boards root folder is all that's required.

You need to refresh your browser f5 or clear your browser cache and it will show. Also adding your board to your favorites (bookmarks) also works.

I'm not sure why but even after emptying my broswer cache I still can't see it. Are you still able to see it on your side?

No favicon for me. What code do you used for your favicon? And which browser? I have Opera 11.

I have no issue seeing it even after a f5 refresh. Remove the edit from your overall_header.html file (not needed)
Place the favicon.ico file in your board root folder (same place as the config.php file) Which I find to be correct http://iluvatarsgrace.com/favicon.ico

EDIT:
Most web browsers do not require any HTML to retrieve a favicon that conforms to the de facto file name and type (favicon.ico) located in the web site's root. If no favicon link is detected upon HTML page load completion and no previous site visits are recorded in the browser's history, a favicon.ico is requested automatically.

Well, the solution is in your html code...

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="en-gb" xml:lang="en-gb">
<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.iluvatarsgrace.com/home/emcha/public_html/favicon.ico">
<head>

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
<meta http-equiv="content-language" content="en-gb" />
<meta http-equiv="content-style-type" content="text/css" />
<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.iluvatarsgrace.com/home/emcha/public_html/favicon.ico">
Need to be after <head> and not before. Also replacing the direkt link with a relative link like favicon.ico would also work.

Some browsers do and it's better do define it, then leaving it. And writing it to the wrong place doesn't make it any better...

Normally opera detects the favicon even without having it defined in your source code, but here it cannot found it because of the error i stated in my previous post.

Close your browser, then reopen it.
It should work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon

The german version differs and contains the sentence in which is mentioned, that you should use the html code for compatibility reasons.
