Help I got Spammers!

Post by mrgeeza »

Hey There,

For about 4 weeks now I've been getting about anywhere between 2 - 6 posts a day from a spam bot registering accounts on my website and posting in only one category on my forum. I've got anti spam "recaptcha" that I heard was pretty good, I also have email activation and as far as I can see, the category that the bot is posting in is the same as all the others.

The main concern is my website is a family friendly site and it's posting links to pornography. The board that the bot is posting in is here:

http://www.mygamingstation.com/communit ... m.php?f=51

Sorry for the link however if someone could go on and take a look to see if there is a weak point in it I'd love to know.

What can I do to stop these annoying automated spammers?

Hope you can help,

MrGeeza 8-)

Have you read the sticky topic just above where you posted?

Yeah. I had a flick through earlier today. I've tried most of the ideas suggested apart from Admin activation mainly because I don't have time to check each new user. I'm always quite hesitant to install plugins as I like my version of phpBB to be clean and tidy but I might try one and see.

In terms of the Newly Registered Users Group idea, is that what phpBB use?

Thanks Kevin :)

Try the Q&A. It's much better than any of the others imo.

Just don't pick an overused question like what colour is the sky or what is 2+2.

The newly registered users (NRU) group is used on here.
We have it set on 1 post for approval. 99.9% of spambots are spotted in their first post.
We spot and remove them and so you never see them.

Thanks! I have just activated Q&A on my site I will run it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes :)

If I'm still not in luck I will try the NRU method. :)

Thanks for your help!

Sorry to double post. I just wanted to update and say that sadly the Q&A system failed I had 3 new spam posts today from 3 new bots. :(

You need to reword it a bit.

They seem to have 'learnt' text that says to put a particular word in to the box.
Try something like writing one of the words in the sentence in upper case and asking them to put that in the box.

Ok. Same again. Found some more spam. I was using questions like:

"This is an anti-spambot question. Please type the WORD that is capitalised in this sentence"

and still no luck. I think the only option now is NRU :(

Nice looking site :) I wouldn't give up on the Q&A option just yet. Ask some really obscure questions like,
"If you go out in the rain you will get: A:DRY B:TALLER C: WET" etc...

Again. About 50mins ago I had some more spam. I've checked and double checked and tried all the ideas. Still nothing works. :(

Thanks for your continued support guys.

I really think the only option is NRU :P

Don't give up - have a look at the topic
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... #p12950926
(link corrected 15th Feb)

A simple solution based on three steps:-
1. Require User Authentication, so they must provide a valid e-mail address
2. Use Q&A with carefully thought out questions, for example "Which item is soft - WoodWoolWireRockCoal"
3. Check the IP and e-mail address against the StopForumSpam database.

Coding for the database check is in the topic.

Good luck - and don't let them win!!!

They may not be bots, but human spammers. Since they tend to look the same as regular members, it's hard to find an automated way of stopping them. Perhaps appoint a few more moderators to help shut them down quickly.

Checking e-mail address against the StopForumSpam database eliminates a lot of human spammers!
