[Resolved] Moving and copying phpBB

Post by Ag2000CO »

Strongly believing in the 7P program and being new to mySQL I just want to be sure I understand things correctly.

I have been playing with and trying to understand phpBB and am now (I think) ready to move my forum to a new domain, same ISP. I would also like to keep the current implementation as an off line test bed to "play with."

If I understand what I have read here, If I set ACP >> server settings > Force Server URL settings to NO, backup everything, copy all files to the new domain and then use the backup database file to restore the new implementation, things should work. Do I need to do a DB restore with the same $dbhost, $dbname, and $dbuser and $dbpasswd ?

If I then go into the /old/config.php and change $table_prefix and then do a restore (ACP >> Maintenance >> Restore) I will create a new set of DB tables for the old (original) implementation so I can add/delete/whatever without affecting the new "Live" copy.

Am I close??

Thanks for the quick reply. I was however wanting to keep the testbed on my ISP's server, not moving it to my PC. With the testbed on the net I can show other people a suggested change and get their opinion before adding changes to the "live" board. This thing is kind of a group think implementation.

Oh ok, the article explains how to copy your files and database to another server. You don't have to remove your existing board at all just copy/backup your existing files and then transfer them to wherever you want them to be. The article for setting up a server on your pc was an afterthought :)

For example, if you're existing board is at http://myforum.com you could make a new folder like http://myforum.com/forum and copy your existing files in to the new /forum folder, create a new database and import your database backup in to the new database. You can then set the new board registration how you want. You could even make it so that registration isn't allowed and then manually create whichever users you want to see your work, there is a tool in the STK for doing that. Or am I missing the point?

Yes, Mixstar that is the objective.
The forum works fine now in domain http://www2.my_domain.com/ATG/BB/ This will be the play pin.

The live version, same server, should be in http://www.real_domain.org/bb/

I used ACP and phpMyadmin to backup database.
Downloaded everything in BB/ and uploaded them to real_domain.org/bb/
I used a utility testmysql.php and I can see the database.

Get the following errors from phpBB, stk and erk:

phpBB/
General Error Could not get style data

phpBB/stk/
The support Toolkit encountered a fatal error. >>> goto ERK

phpBB/stk/erk.php
Fatal error: Call to undefined method erk_bom_sniffer::trigger_message() in /export/home/lking/www.atheatregroup.org/bb/stk/includes/c ... niffer.php on line 1011

"all" file permissions look correct. I reloaded all files form working copy, no change.

Suggestions?

Finely got the server configuration correct. works fine - now.

The longer I work with phpBB the more impressed I am with the design.

Glad you got it sorted, sorry I missed your second last post. Very often manually clearing the /cache folder of everything but .htaccess and index.htm will sort out many of the oddities that happen when you move/transfer a board such as "General Error Could not get style data" etc. If you copy the /cache folder to another location the data in the cache is wrong hence you can get some errors. I never bother transferring the /cache folder anymore I create a blank one.

Try manually clearing the cache. Open the cache folder on the server and delete everything except index.htm and .htaccess (if you can see it).
