Did a straight DB move, now quotes show strange characters

Post by digitaltoast » Fri Feb 25, 2011 3:30 pm

Simple move - mysql export, zip board, move the whole lot to new server, unzip board, mysqlimport, done!

All was working well until people started to notice posts BEFORE the move have strange characters.

For example:
"The Attorney General’s Annual Fraud Indicator report of January 2010 states that £30bn of fraudulent activity...
So in this case, the first quote is OK, the apostrophe has been turned into ’ and the £ sign has gained an appendage.

Or:
Shakespeare: “The Tempest”
In this case, it's the quote marks that have been turned into “

The DB charset is utf8_bin, the page is text/html; charset=UTF-8

I *COULD* trawl the forum collecting examples of all the weirdness, and then do a find/replace in the DB, but I feel there must a more subtle or "proper" way!
