the question and answer has not been broken yet. the trick is to not use a question that can be googled for an answer.

like, :

type in the last four letters of the implement
answer: ment

robert

Not true, a good non-searchable Q&A has, as yet, not been compromised, there's no reason to use anything more complicated.

Are you sure you don't mean StopForumSpam.com? :?

By the way, I have used StopForumSpam in the past and it is effective at warning against bots which have registered. However, it doesn't stop the spambots from registering (and if it did it could also block legitimate users).

The Q&A CAPTCHA is not simple to crack for questions which must be interpreted by humans because no spambot could possibly have an inbuilt list of all questions and answers (or that list would be massive and very impractical). Obvious questions like "are you a human?" are apparently broken, so the solution to this is to use unique questions.

Yes, but this could possibly mean you're blocking legitimate users that have been accidently blocked by StopForumSpam.

Do you know if it only disallows registration if one field (eg. email) has been found, or two or three fields (eg. email, username and IP address)?

@/a3

I dont think so stopspammer will accidently block users, and if they do block users, means they are spamming around

i think it checks for username, email and ip address

You're assuming that spambots only find the registration page because it has a particular name, are you sure that is the case for every spambot or even any of them?
You cannot post if you are not registered. And you cannot register if you don't have the link to the registration page. Am I wrong?

And you cannot register if you don't have the link to the registration page.
Spambots don't use links, then use code, eg

Code: Select all

http://rmcgirr83.org/ucp.php?mode=register

I don't really get it. You say "Spambots don't use links, they use code" and then as example you give a link.
My idea was to rename the 'ucp.php' to something else like 'd34739hfkjadh.php'.
How do you register if you don't know the name of that page?

---------
edit:

Or, you change the command 'register' to something else like 'sjsjsjasndsnds'.
What do you think?

You see I really don't get all this, ask yourself the question: "do I have a spambot problem"? yes/no

If it's yes then try a properly set up Q&A and that will be the end of it. If any of you have evidence that Q&A has been breached please report it here I'm sure a lot of people would be interested.

Spam bots acts like a spider crawler, but looking for codes and following links that has forms.

Maybe if you change ucp.php?mode=registration to something else it's gona work just if you also do not give the 'hyperlink' anywere. Just type as common text on index "type example.com/ucp.php?mode=asdfas789df to proceed the registration"

Another thing usefull should be have 5 or 6 "no" on registration and just one "yes" to submit "accept registration terms". Changing position every refresh.

Block registration after 2 tries is also usefull

****
We have now 16 hours without captcha, just with that poor numeric question, and no spam.

After 24h we will disable that question and enable captcha to compare.

ow, almost forget:

spam bots should easyly understand questions that uses letters copied, isn't!? But looks like a good way!

Ow, I was trying to implement questions like a quiz, and the user just can become a members above 60% range. Anyone nows how to do this?

10 questions about pizza that the new user must aswer 6 right.

help!

*Mixstar,
*by the way, my captcha vanilla from phpbb 3.0.8 don't work and it's too boring. Any captcha is freaking boring and useless (or usefull JUST to stop spam and boring)

You make the mistake of thinking CAPTCHA necessarily has to do with images. It doesn't. The Q&A CAPTCHA is EXACTLY the same as your question/answer.

What I want to achieve is 'easy registration' for legit visitors (of course, while keeping the bots away). So, I want to get rig of complicated things such as email confirmation and CAPTCHA.

Again: My idea is to let only the legit users to find the registration page/method. So, only if legit users will know the registration's form link then I will keep the bots away while allowing legit users to post almost instantly (after a <5 seconds long registration session).

My idea is not THAT CRAZY. Right?
