Can't find a record of email address in DB (SOLVED)

Post by Dr DBW » Tue Aug 23, 2011 1:41 am

Using 3.0.7-PL1

Have a user that was trying to get back onto our forums, they have forgotten their username, so tried to register a new username using the same email address. We have it set so that you can't do that, email address can't be used twice. Following is the message that you get:
The entered e-mail address is already in use.
Doing a search of the registered users using the "find a member" search in the ACP, the email address does not show up at all, I cannot find the entry. Even using a large number of different combinations of wildcards, still can't find any email address that is even remotely similar.

What is going on here?

Just to try it out, I attempted to register a new user, using a different email address, then change it to the correct email address in the ACP. Not surprisingly, it said you can't do that as that email address is already being used.

Just to be sure, try searching another known email address to make sure the email search is working correctly.

Good suggestion, should have thought of that to provide more info / details ...

Yes, it does work. Previous testing searching for various addresses using wildcard * all worked fine. Just did another test to see if it works for a specific email address, that works fine too, it finds things as you would expect it to without any trouble.

The user occupying the e-mail-address is either inactive or ignored - the default search only finds users which are either normal or founders. To overcome this open /memberlist.php and find (it will occur twice):

Code: Select all

WHERE u.user_type IN (" . USER_NORMAL . ', ' . USER_FOUNDER . ")
Replace both with:

Code: Select all

WHERE TRUE
Now try to search again. Keep in mind that everybody now also finds everyone.

Is that script used in the ACP member search? As that is where it is being done, in the users interface of the administrator control panel.

Yes (looking at the link in the ACP would have shown you that it also contains the word memberlist).

I just wasted an hour fixing this one. The user was getting "email already in use" error, I couldn't find it in 'Find a Member'. I got a result looking in phpmyadmin but clicking the link to the result didn't bring up the record. A search of users_email in the users table didn't get any results.

Turns out the member had entered the email address as memb@bigpond.com.au instead of memb@bigpond.com. I found it by doing a search for %memb%.
