I'd like to update my board to the latest phpBB version

Post by Tony Stark »

But I've made an AWFUL lot of changes, all of which I've saved, but none of which I want to lose. So could someone please tell me, step by step, how to update?

To update a modified board you will need the auto update package from here. Basically, you upload the /install folder, browse to it and follow the instructions. This is assuming you are using 3.0.2 or later.

Backup your files and database before starting this.

Backup my files and database just in case something goes wrong, or back them up because I will definitely lose something?

no, just in case. there is little possibilty of losing anything as long as you don't purposefully delete the database and doing an update you will not get anywhere near it.

an update consists of updating or replacing the files and running a simple update script against the database.

the only thing you might lose due to errors in the process would be any files you have edited/changed.

however, if you follow the instructions precisely in the autoupdate package, that is also very unlikely.

but, the backups will save you "just in case".

luck,

Great, thanks, both of you. Update worked fine. Everything as it should be.

Later on in the update process after the database has been updated and the necessary file changes have been determined.

Whether you can use the Automatic method depends on the security settings imposed by your host, phpBB may present it as an option, but it may not work.

Sorry for reviving this thread, but the time has come again to update to the latest version, and it's so long now, I've forgotten how I start. I'm using filezilla. What, exactly, should I do?
