Directory change after installation.

Post by haqzore »

Hi all.

I did a search, but the stuff i found didnt really apply to my scenario.

i have my host, and my forum has always been at the root.

so - www.myhost.com/index.php

now, i want to move it to the "forums" folder. for example, to: www.myhost.com/forums/index.php

is this a big deal? will i break links? do i need to change any settings in the ACP?

thanks in advance for any help.

ACP > General tab > Server settings > Script path > change to /forums

Create the forums folder on the server and move all the phpBB files from the root to the new folder.

Internal links (within the board) will be fine because they are relative. However, links to the board from elsewhere will need to be changed. Google 301 redirect for ways that may help.

ok... thanks. really sounds like it should be super basic.

make folder, move forums into folder, change 1 setting in ACP.

outside links to the forum will be easy also. gotcha. appreciate the reply.

Are you sure about the internal links? If I look in a mySQL backup all links are in full, like:

Code: Select all

When I suggest that you should alter your files, BACKUP them BEFORE.

No, it doesn’t. Go to http://www.masgc.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=1103 and click on the link "User Control Panel" and you will get a 404 error.

Depends what links you are referring to. For links added by members to posts they will still point to the original location because they were, and are, absolute links. Links to and within control panels, and to forums, topics, and posts are relative.

If somebody doesn’t come up with some nice SQL questions to change http://www.aaa.com to http://www.aaa.com/forum/ then you will have to change every link in posts, PM etc manually.

As I’m an old fart we did this during PHPBB2 time by I wrote a program in Windows that toke a mySQL backup and split it in small files, searched and replaced all occasions of http://www.aaa.com to http://www.aaa.com/forum/ and then merged it back again. After that the backup was uploaded with Bigdump. I don’t know if this is still necessary.

[Edit: you could probaably use a .htaccess file for this too]
