Links from mail.mydomain.com

I've been monitoring my forum traffic via awstats, and noticed a recent (last few months) large increase in:

Connect to site from - Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines):
mail.mydomain.com

My host tells me this subdomain is setup by default, for cpanel installations, for sending mail.

A few months ago I could see no trace of traffic from this source, but now there's like 10,000+ hits
to pages like http://mail.mydomain.com/viewtopic.php

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Can you see referrers at all?

I can only see the stats from Awstats, which does not tell me any more than this.

It appears that my host uses this subdomain for mail from my domain... although I don't understand why there was no trace of this URL in previous months. I cannot find this subdomain in my cpanel anywhere, so it must be internally created by the host. Is this common practice?

Unfortunately it seems Google has decided to index my site for mail.mydomain.com as well, so I must find a way around, as this would effect my search rankings.
