Wordpress MultiSite with phpbb3 Sub Forums

Post by ausip » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:00 pm

I want to create a network of blog sites and forums where users will use the same username and password across all sites and forums. I am hoping I can acheive this with Wordpress MultiSite, phpBB3 and a phpbb3 bridge, for single signon authentication

Here is the general layout of my planned website network.

http://www.masterdomain.com
http://www.masterdomain.com/forum

http://www.domain1.com
http://www.domain1.com/sub-forum1
http://www.domain2.com
http://www.domain2.com/sub-forum2
http://www.domain3.com
http://www.domain3.com/sub-forum3

I think I will need to use CNAME's, .htaccess redirects or symlinks to achieve the required sub-forum URL's.

Is this possible with phpBB3 and Wordpress?

Any ideas are welcome

I have read the whole post but i will answer this part of it:

Reading this topic, i see that it is not possible.
Erik Frèrejean wrote:To clarify, well its kinda possible but that's not something for the fainthearted. You'll have to completely rewrite the phpBB session system to make this possible. AFAIK nobody posted a working solution publicly but I know that its done in some very specific cases.
This indeed can not be done with a vanilla phpBB installation due to the way phpBB handles sessions and related data. It will always overwrite certain data when switching between the boards and with that cause various issues.
Thanks

That is only related to sharing the database between forums. I think the OP only wants to alter user authentication so people will only have to sign in once anywhere on the website.

Maybe you can find or build an [wiki=Authentication_plugins]Authentication plugin[/url] that will allow automatic sign in. I've heard of a few Facebook Connect MODs in development, not sure if any have been validated here yet. But maybe something like that could be used.

I guessed he was going to be working with more then one DB.

Yes, I think each forum and blog will have its own database. There just needs to be a way to easily login to each of them, so I think some external method may be the easiest way. You use Facebook Connect, OpenID, or something similar and then find a way of connecting that external login to the authentication module of each application. Unless there are already MODs or plugins available it won't be easy to do.

I am planning on one installation of wordpress, setup in multi-site using the MutliSite domain mapping tool. This is setup and working perfectly.

I then want to setup one phpBB installation with one database. I was hoping I could use the phpBB3 feature of Sub-Forums to create a Sub-Forum for each domain.

This would mean 1 x Wordpress database and 1 x phpBB3 database.

Well, that is much more limited than what you originally described. You could probably use one of the existing plugins for WordPress:
WP phpBB Bridge
or
Wp2BB

or this MOD in development for phpBB (however, MODs in development should not be used on a live board):

Either one of those bridges is what I had in mind. My query is also relating to whether the forum will actually work if I use .htaccess re-writes etc to redirect domain1.com/forum to the domain1 subforum?
