What’s the best way to stop someone from bogus messages.

Post by captain_Kurt1 »

If I go into the administration panel and then to Manage users, find the person I want to manage for bad behavior and do a Ban by username, can I then go back in and do a ban by e-mail and then ban by IP and have them all three be banned by that inference.
Also if after I do the ban by what ever can I then do a delete user and will the bans still be there if this person tries to comes back in?
What is the best way to stop someone from just blasting bogus messages all about the forums?

Technically there is no way. I'm sure the user in question will eventually get bored of getting banned and will leave anyway.

I've seen MODs for confusing people though. Or you could confuse him/her by setting all of their posting permissions to "never" so they won't see the "New Topic" or "Post Reply" buttons any more.

Hi /a3,
What about the other parts of my question, about the banning will it ban in all three, or does it just banned the last instance of doing a ban.
and then too if you delete this user do the bans get trashed?

This might be the best way, and not ban them at all, but to go into their permissions and just make it where they can't do anything. lol. will this work for that user as far as keeping them from posting etc.. and can they reset it themselves to where they can go back in and post? hope not. please let me know.

no, they cann not reset it themselves unless they have access to the admin panel.

I just went in to the admin panel then to user permissions, put this persons user ID in and then clicked Never for everything, then I tested his permissions and I was able to post, and read and see all the buttons just as before I did this to him. what am I doing wrong?

you are still using your permissions when you are logged in as admin.

log out, then log in as this person and you will see that if you have set permissions correctly you will not be able to do anything.

I don't understand. If I log out then I'm not able to log in using his name for I don't know his passcode etc.. I was in the admin panal and after bringing him up I clicked the link that said "Test out users permissions" but am still able to post messages under his permissions. what am I doing wrong?

try this;
create a test user.
set those same permissions to never for that test user.

now, log out as admin and log in as that test user and test.

if the test user can not do whatever you want him to not be able to do then he won't either.

OK, I don't know what is going on, but I just did as you suggested, created a test user, then logged in with my normal user ID went into Admin panel, changed the permissions for the test user all to Never then logged out, logged back in using the test user ID and was still able to post and do everything I could do before. Can someone walk me through this or tell me what is wrong with this picture.

First, let's get on the same page. Are the "bogus messages" and "bad behavior" just spamming? If so, read the Preventing Spam sticky topic. Preventing a spammer from registering in the first place is much better than having to clean up after them.

Second, if these are spammers, don't bother banning them; that's a waste of time. What I do is ban their E-mail domain if it's spammy (for example, if [email protected] registered, I'd ban *@cheap-viagra.com) or if get a lot of registrations from a country that I don't care about and is known for spamming (for example, I have banned *@*.cn to block all Chinese E-mail addresses). Then I delete the user and their posts (don't do this if it's a real user that you're just banning -- see below).

Third, if their user name is spammy or I see variations of the same name, I disallow that user name. For example, if a user registered as ReplicaWatches, I would disallow *Replica*Watches*.

Fourth, I only ban IP addresses if I see multiple registrations from the same small range of IP addresses. Banning an IP address out of haste can block legitimate users (many ISPs dynamically assign IP addresses).

Finally, if this is a real user that just went off the rails, you can ban him and his E-mail address. Of course, he can just register again with a new user name and E-mail address (and through a proxy if you banned his IP address). You can also delete the user and leave his posts intact (at least the good ones); any other bans should stay in place (the only one that I'm not sure about is user name bans because I don't use them, but E-mail address bans, IP address bans and disallowed user names definitely stay around).

and, apparently you are not setting the proper permissions the way you think you are or the user could not post etc.

You don't just set all permissions to never.
You should find the permissions to disallow something and set them to Never. E.g. to disallow posting or creating topics, you would need to set the Can start new topics and Can reply to topics for all applicable forums to Never.

Also, banning username, IP and e-mail address are independent of eachother.
Banning a username will allow someone to visit/see/read the board as guest, but will not allow login with that username.
Banning an IP will disallow someone to see/read the board coming with that IP address. Using a proxy or using another location with different IP (e.g. internet cafe, library, WIFI point) will allow them to read the board (and even to login if the username were not banned).
Banning an e-mail address is only applicable for new registrations.

When deleting a user, the ban on that username will be removed as well, freeing the username for new registration.

I must be going to a different permissions set because I don't even see Can start new topics and Can reply to topics
Here's where I'm going. After going into the Admin pan. I click on the Permissions tab at the top, then I select the users permissions on the left side of screen, then I put in the users name and click on Advanced permissions and I don't see what you have mentioned.
