Thanks for the ultraquick reply!

- guest posting is disabled
- registration is protected using the following combo: Q&A Captcha, check IP against DNS Blackhole List enabled
- duplicate installation: not as far as I know and no changes at all over the past months

So since no recent changes were made that may have opened doors, it amazes me that all of a sudden there's this spam attack, which appears to be a general issue?

There's a difference between sites suddenly having spam attacks due to them being able to crack a common question format and what you're saying which is that they're effectively bypassing your registration approval.

What's the address of your site? You can PM it if you like.

It started to me too a few hours ago. Even changing from Q&A to reCaptcha didn't help. I think there might be a general problem :(

reCAPTCHA was beaten by spambots a year ago.

Doing that will only make matters worse.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem - my forum has been running nicely with just 1 or 2 bots managing to register in the course of a week for the last year or so. No changes have been made so I was amazed when I logged in this morning to find over 40 since midnight last night. I have changed the Q & A but they still keep coming thick and fast - it didn't slow them down at all.

Reading posts from others here today it looks to me as if this is a general problem not just my site.

Any help much appreciated,

thanks
Sue

I have the problem too.

It seems they have a program "Xrumer 7.01".

It's very powerful.

I hope phpBB can stop it.

I'm on phpbb 3.09 and also got hit with about 35 new registrations last night, all spammers. All were activated, but only one managed to post a new topic, which was not approved. We have a new members intro section with no post limit, and post limits set at 1 or more on all other sections of the forum which has probably helped.

For the last year we have been free of spammers, just using QA.

very worrying ! not sure what to do, have changed the QA question ... might disable new registration's over night if this continues just as a temporary measure.

I am being bombarded by bots from mainly the RU I have captcha in place but they are still registering, luckily my board is set so that I have to activate them, today I have had over 50 trying to get in actually in the last 20 mins this figure has gone up by 22 so its now 72.

It is happening on my board too - woke up to about 15 new members and 2 of them had made 35-40 posts each. If it is happening to multiple sites across the world all with differing Q&A then the problem is not gonig to be the actual questions being asked. I really hope it gets sorted out quickly...

It's just a case of finding a better way to stop them. It's not a software fault. There are multiple other antispam plugins you can employ.
