Migrate 3gig database to new server?

Post by waxxie »

I have a phpbb site on shared hosting with the database now over 3gigs and the shared hosting has outlived its usage and we are moving to a VPS server.

The problem I am having is that I can export the data just fine, however when I import it to the new server it always times out and I end up with only chunks of the data.

I have tried the "BigDump" script which imports chunks of the data at a time but it also fails randomly.

Does anyone have any experience with such matters and how can I do this without loosing any more hair.

get your new host to restore it for you.
3 gigs is really large. how many posts do you have in it?

also, it is possible that over 2/3 of that size is in the search tables and could be removed from the backup.

you can rebuild the search once the new board is up and running.

well, that would certainly explain the large size of the database.

your best bet will be to have the host make the transfer for you.

How big are your phpbb_search_wordmatch & phpbb_search_wordlist tables?

If you have a VPS you should have SSH access and you can import the database as described in Knowledge Base - Moving Your phpBB3 Forum To A New Host Using phpMyAdmin.
