Edit link in Welcome/Welcome to the xxxx forum (Solved)

Post by MsIrey » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:10 pm

Before anyone logs into the forum the first message they see on the index page in the Welcome category is the Welcome to the xxxx forum. That message contains a link to the registration page. Where do we edit/change the link?

there is nothing like that in standard phpbb so it must be something you added.

how about a link so we can see what you are talking about.

http://linuxinternationals.org/forum/index.php

When you mouse over the Join our community today! link it points to /phpbb3 however the registration is on /forum. This wasn't an issue before but we've recently moved servers and don't have mod redirect switched on.

That link is hard coded into the description of the "Welcome to the Linux Internationals Forum" description.

Been there. No way to edit it. As you can see, at one time we were able to edit the message and we did but it has been so long ago that we are all drawing a blank on how we did it. Most likely using sftp but we haven't been able to relocate the file.

:(

what happens when you click on that green gear icon he showed you?

that is how you change this. if you have access to the admin panel, then you can do this with no problem.

Nope. When I click on the Welcome category, there is no where to edit the message. If I click on the edit button for the Welcome forum, the message displays but it is uneditable.

To be more specific...
When I click on the Welcome forum's edit button there is no message in the spot that describes the forum so nothing to edit.

Edit:
Went to the Welcome to etc. subforum and found this

are you doing this in the admin panel forums section?

click on the forum named "Welcome to the Linux Internationals Forum" under the "welcome" category then edit the description for it.

It is not the category it is the "Welcome to the Linux Internationals Forum" forum. You need to edit that not the category. Click on the "Welcome" category in Manage forums and it will then show the children.

that is an interesting way to create a description for a forum by using a bbcode.

never would have thought of that.

I've revised my post with the picture in it and inserted a new picture instead of what was there.

We did it in the BBCode so that we could include the linkable text in the description.

It was about 4 years ago. We've aged since then.

Thank you all for your fast responses. We've just moved some forums to another server and I think we are a bit frazzeled.

My co-admin says it's because I live in Florida but I don't listen to him.

No need for a custom BBCode you could also do it just using the standard BBCodes:

Code: Select all

Some descriptive text [url=http://www.phpbb.com/]Visit phpBB![/url]
Gives: Some descriptive text Visit phpBB!

I think he means that they created a custom bbcode with the whole message in it and then just put that bbcode in the desription field.

like this:

bbcode: [stuff][/stuff]
replacement:

Code: Select all

this is the whole description and here is the link <a href="http://whatever.com">link text</a>
usage: edit the forum description and just insert [stuff][/stuff]
not sure but that is what I think they did.
