Error: Private message to too many recipients? Why?

Post by xiaolu »

My message board is of phpBB 3.0.11

Refer to the two pics below: As the Site Admin, I tried to send a PM to more than 5 users at the same time, but got the error "You tried to send a private message to too many recipients.".

But with ACP I have "Private message settings" --> "Maximum number of allowed recipients:" set to zero (0), that is, "If 0 is entered, an unlimited number is allowed."

I don't seem to find anywhere any other setting that prevents me (as Site Admin) from having more than 5 recipients per PM to be sent?

Anyone knows where I need to update some setting or?

Thanks!

Check the group settings too.

Thanks!

I checked ACP --> "USERS AND GROUPS" --> "Manage Groups", and then:

For "Administrator" and "Global Moderator": "Maximum number of allowed recipients per private message" is set to 0 (no limit)

For '"Registered Users" and "Newly Registered Users", "Maximum number of allowed recipients per private message" is set to 5

But I am (logged in as) Site Admin (of Administrator Group, I think?).

You can see which groups you're in on your own profile page.

Thanks, and I see:

Administrators (checked)
Global Moderators
Registered Users

I'd say I am in Administrators group (or perhaps I am in all of the above 3 groups, and since "Registered Users" group has a restriction of 5 recipients per PM, thus the error as mentioned above?)

You're in all of them (as you should be).

Try increasing the registered users group to a bigger number and see if you still get the message.

You are a member of "Registered Users" group which has the limit set to 5.
0 < 5 so you need to set 6 for "Administrator" and "Global Moderator" group.

0 means unlimited but then it is limited by the next group or board wide setting.

You're not in that group.

Do you agree that he should increase the limit for "Administrator" and "Global Moderator" group? :)

No, because they are already set to 0, which means unlimited. There is no way to increase unlimited.

I'm not going to argue with 100K posts but it looks like 0 means unlimited if it is set for all of the groups you are in.

No.
Zero means "no limit"', the same as a "no" permission means "no permission". It is overridden by the highest limit set in another group. The OP should be setting a higher limit for the administrators and global mods group.

If it actually meant the zero to override an explicit limit, then you would have to set an explicit limit for every single group you setup, otherwise their default zero limit would override whatever you intend as the registered user's default limit.

There are two settings - a global setting and a per group setting. Since his global setting is 0 (unlimited) AND his Global Moderator and Admin group settings are also 0 (unlimited), how would you go about raising the limit for the latter two groups?
