Non-member receiving e-mails

Post by potku » Tue Dec 02, 2014 6:29 pm

We ran into an interesting problem. A person, who says is not a member of our forum, received a group e-mail from our forum the other day. We do not have any MODs installed that would somehow send e-mails to other people than our users. We immediately checked his e-mail address in the ACP: not there.

We could come up with only one explanation: a member is forwarding his e-mails (from us) to this person's e-mail address. But then again, like he pointed out, it seems like the e-mails are coming directly from us to his e-mail address.

How on Earth is this possible? :shock:

ask to see the email. then you can post the headers etc. here if you wish and someone can tell you what is happening.

there is no possible way the board can send an email to someone that is not a member or was not a member.

even if someone had been a member and been deleted, their email address would no longer be in the database and therefore the board could not send them an email.

Except if users have the Can e-mail topics permission, from within a topic, they can send a link to the topic and a user added message to any email address.

Exactly. And that's what makes this so very strange... :shock: This is undoubtedly the weirdest phpBB situation I have ever come across. I am sure there's a logical explanation for it, but I wonder what that is...

The only thing he said was that he saw a link to one of our discussions on Facebook, clicked it, read the forums for a while and then left. He never registered or anything. Even if he could subscribe to topics (not possible), the e-mail he received was a mass e-mail we sent out the other day.

Wow...

That may be... However, that part of the message this non-member had included in his e-mail to us had our standard header information (one of the language files, as you all know). In English, it looks like this:
The following is an e-mail sent to you by an administrator of "Potku.net".
If this message is spam, contains abusive or other comments you find
offensive please contact the webmaster of the board at the following
address:

admin@potku.net

Include this full e-mail (particularly the headers).

Message sent to you follows:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, that non-member is not receiving our e-mails anymore, so this problem is more a curiosity now.
But really, how did this happen? Did someone else forward our e-mail to him for some reason? How come he sees the sender as admin(at)potku.net?
Or is this guy just playing us...? He did sound very angry, though (using cuss words etc.).
You are confusing the Email message's visible header fields with the message Internet headers, which is what we are asking for. Depending on your Email client, those are visible in "Options" or "Properties".
It is possible that a forwarding address was set up by someon that pointed to his email address. In this case, he would still see sender as the correct sender but the to field would be the different email. This would be visible in headers.
I see.. I never knew this. Thanks. And that's why I thought the header information wasn't needed. Well, I never knew how to dig it out (from Horde), but after Brf's illustrative post, I now do. Thanks for that, too!
I assume that is the header of the message he sent to you. It is not the header of the message he is complaining about.
Yup, unfortunately I deleted that already... Since he has blocked emails from Potku.net, I sent him one from my private email hoping to receive the original that caused him grief. Hopefully he still has it AND is willing to co-operate. He did threaten to sue us, heh... I am not worried about that (even if he is a law student, as he says), but I am pondering about his motivation to help figure this out.
Is the only viable option here that someone forwarded that email to him?
