If you remove the index people will not be able to search, so you would have to recreate it anyway.

In this post, Lumpy Burgertushie wrote:you can always delete the index and rebuild it but that probably won't make that much difference.

however, if you are going to upgrade to 3.1 then do not worry about it as those tables will not be moved over to the new board.
So, this seems to say that you do not have to delete the search tables in your 3.0.x install because 3.1.x will create its own

I've never seen any instructions that suggested it was necessary to delete the search tables in order to upgrade form 3.0 to 3.1 so I don't know why you would think that was necessary?

Your original answer implies the index is kept during the upgrad . Lumpy's answer contradicts that, and is useful to know for those of us with large databases

sorry for the confusion. I believe I was incorrect about what I said above. If the search tables are already there and full, then the database_update.php file will not drop them or empty them etc. it will just use them.

now, if you have some type of problem with your database being too large to work with or upload/download etc., you can empty the search tables for the upgrade. you can then rebuild the search after you finish the upgrade by using that function in the admin panel.

The MySQL Fulltext Search backend has been significantly improved in 3.1 and the size of the index is about 40% less than with 3.0.
