PMs being sent to an unintended, additional user

Post by soumik » Tue Apr 14, 2015 6:34 pm

Hello,

I got this report from one of my users, and it seems like all the PMs that she sent to a recipient also went to the inbox of another unintended user. I confirmed with her that she had not added the other user as a recipient at any point.

What additional information can I provide to help you pinpoint the issue?

The usual.

Please fill out the Support Request Template and post it back here to enable us to assist you better. The "When did your problem begin?" question means: Please describe the actions you took (updating your board, installing a MOD, etc.) prior to this problem becoming noticeable.

I am wondering how to send a PM as an unregistered guest...

How does the sender know it went to an unintended recipient?

I left it to "No" since the issue isn't reproducible by another user.

No, only when the unintended recipient replied to the sender, the sender realized it was being sent to the unintended user.

Here are screenshots of the normal message thread and the one that was sent unintended -
this is the messages between me and the intended recipient.
this is from the the conversation with the outside member.

I've never heard of it happening with standard phpBB.

It may be a problem with the imported files. Since you have no MODs replacing the files with standard versions would be the best option.
  1. Backup all board files and the database.
  2. Download the full package.
  3. Unzip to your desktop and open the phpBB3 folder.
  4. Remove (delete) the config.php file, and the /files, /images and /install folders from the package.
  5. Via FTP or SSH upload the remaining files and folders to the root of your board installation on the server overwriting the existing files.
  6. Done.
Only use a good FTP or SSH client, such as FileZilla, to transfer the files. (File transfer utilities provided in host control panels can cause problems.)

There were no imported files - just the database and the attachments/avatars. I literally did what you described a month ago. No files have been changed since then.

If you are using standard file the most likely explanation is user error: accidentally adding another user such as by clicking on Darth in the friends list.

Is it possible that there is something being carried over from this import that is causing this to happen?

I looked into the database and it seems like Oyabun1 is right. The user added the unintended user into one of the messages, which has multiple "to_address"es.

Mystery solved. Thanks for your help, everyone. :)
