Forum doesn't keep users logged in after host change

Support Request Template
What version of phpBB are you using? phpBB 3.0.2
What is your board's URL? http://forum.chinafonini.it/
Who do you host your board with? slhosting.it
How did you install your board? I used the download package from phpBB.com
What is the most recent action performed on your board? Fresh Install
Is registration required to reproduce this issue? Yes
Do you have any MODs installed? Yes
Do you have any extensions installed? No
What MODs do you have installed? Topic Cement, Prime anti-bot, Links Opening New Windows, Temporary Shadow Topics, Privmsgs, minor tweaks
What styles do you currently have installed? custom
What language(s) is your board currently using? italian
Which database type/version are you using? MySQL 5
What is your level of experience? New to PHP and phpBB
What username can be used to view this issue? phpbb_test
What password can be used to view this issue? phpbb_test
What actions did you take (updating your board; installing a MOD, style or extension; etc.) prior to this problem becoming noticeable? Moved board to another host with same version of php and SQL.
Please describe your problem. First of all, excuse me for my english.

Recently I moved my phpBB 3.0.2 board to a new hosting provider and now it doesn't keep users logged in anymore. As soon as users visit another website, even in the same browser's window, they are logged out, and they are forced to insert username and password every single time they come to the board, even if they check "Log me on automatically each visit".

I know this should be a common issue and i assure you i read a lot of discussions about this matter, but it seems to me that any suggestion i found does not solve my problem.

Summing:

1) PhpBB cookie settings (in Administration Control Panel) are correct, and I tried anyway to modify them in every possible manner, without solving.

2) Security settings, in particular "Session IP validation", have NO EFFECT on the issue: even if i select "None", the problem persists.

3) The problem has nothing to do with custom style: even if i select default ones (prosilver or subsilver2) the problem persists.

Please, don't tell me to update: i tried to update to last version available for automatic update (3.0.14), but then new users couldn't register anymore, so i had to restore my backup version.

I will be very grateful to anyone who will give me useful suggestions, cause it is a forum with 8 years activity and i'm really attached to it.

Thank you in advance.

Try opening the board’s /cache folder on the server and deleting everything except index.htm and .htaccess.

But before you do that, change the cookie name by appending a numeral to its end.

Thank you for your kind replies.

I followed these 2 steps:
- changed the cookie name by appending a numeral to its end
- opened the board’s /cache folder on the server and deleted everything except index.htm and .htaccess

but nothing's changed. You can see visiting my forum that cookie is correctly wrote and it has a name ending with a numeral, but again it won't keep users logged in.

I deleted all files in /cache folder with my FTP client but as soon as the board is running, it keeps writing files in it while i'm doing such operations. Maybe I have to disable the board first?

I repeated the operation after disabling the board, but again, no change.

Please, any other suggestion? I must solve this problem, i don't want to give up after 8 years of activity.

Tell me at least wich kind of technician should be able to solve it... a php expert? a cookie specialist? an SQL expert?

Thank you in advance.

I have just had a look at your site and the problem appears to be something to do with the way you have your site set up.

Your forum is a sub domain of your site and when you enter your forum, from having visited one of the other pages, then it is opening the forum in a new tab and, I suspect, starting a new session - which is probably why you are being logged out.

You say that this problem has only started since you moved hosts which, assuming that the structure was the same on your previous hosts, would suggest that it is something to do with your server set-up (perhaps something in your .htaccess file that you have not copied over)

Sorry I cannot help more than that

Thanks, I really appreciate any help.

The forum had identical structure for its whole life and it never had this issue before the transfer.

The thing I noticed is that the actual provider manages subdomains in a slightly different manner.
When I was with previous provider, the folder "public_html" of the main domain did not show subdomains' content. I had to choose instead the folder "domains" and then the domain "forum.chinafonini.it" to see its own "public_html" folder.
Now that I am with the new provider, the "public_html" folder of the main domain, shows a folder "forum" wich represents the subdomain, and I can see its content like it was a subdirectory.

Furthermore, I have another forum with this provider, hosted on the same server, but with no subdomain, and it works fine! You can see it here: http://www.dpdc.it (i'ts phpBB 3.0.4, to be precise).

I hope these could be useful elements to get rid of this problem.

contact your host about this. it is apparently something different about the subdomain structure on this new host.
what do you have in your htaccess file for the board and/or for the public_html directory?

in the admin panel, do you have "force url settings" set to yes or no?

switch it from whatever you have to the other choice and test.

Thanks Robert, I had "force url settings" disabled, but i tried to enable it and nothing changes.

I noticed that, in the same ACP page, I have "compression gzip" enabled... can this option have something to do with my problem?

That option has been known to cause problems, but usually if the server has it turned on as well.

Try turning it off and see what happens but I think you will need to do as Lumpy says and talk to your hosts about this.

Thanks for your replies, i've been away from PC for a while, sorry.

I noticed i didn't answer to a question: it seems i have no .htaccess file in public_html folder of the main domain, but i have a .htaccess file in "forum" folder, wich represent the subdomain content. This .htaccess file only has these entries in it:

Code: Select all

<Files "config.php">
Order Allow,Deny
Deny from All
</Files>

<Files "common.php">
Order Allow,Deny
Deny from All
</Files>
Gzip compression seems to have no effect on the automatic login problem.

I've been talking with my host since the very first moment and, in fact, i have a support ticket open since about one month. They are very kind but they have no idea about my issue. :(

If this can be useful, i suppose that my problem is related to subdomains' structure adopted by new host, cause is very different from previous host's one.

For better illustrate the difference i made this basic picture:

Please, tell me: could this be the cause of my problem?

My very kind provider has modified his server just for me, recreating identical structure to the one i had with previous provider, but this did not solve the problem!

I'm really really really disappointed and i really don't know what to do. This forum is very important for me...

PLEASE HELP!!!

I had the same problem. I just moved two forums from one website to another and the login information wouldn't stay.

I cleared most of the cache as indicated above but still had the problem. Then I looked at the Server settings ... I had forgotten to change the Server protocol, Domain name, and Script path!

Once I made the necessary changes in the Server settings and cleared the cache again, the forums immediately started remembering my login. :D
