Missing posts and topics from 3 months...

Post by tonzodehoo » Wed Oct 05, 2016 1:38 pm

Hello, I have just logged into one of the forums I have setup and manage and discovered that just over three months worth of posts and topics have disappeared! From 6th July till 4th October have gone.
Any idea how this could occur? Only I have admin control to be able to remove posts and topics and the admin log shows nothing that would indicate me having even erroneously deleted anything. None of the logs show anything untoward.

Its quite worrying as there was a lot on those posts and topics.

Let me know if anyone has had the same issue at all.

Generally, if you've done nothing to cause this issue then someone else has, probably your host. Ask them if they've done anything around those dates such as a roll back or similar. You may find something in the server error logs to give you a clue.

Could you have accidentally setup auto prune on a forum on your board?

Hello. Thanks for your input.

I have contacted them for any insight they can offer. Not that I am holding out much hope there but I shall pursue this with them.

Thanks for your suggestion.
There is no record in the logs of me having done so and its not something I have ever done on any forum. Auto Pruning is off on the main forum that has lost most of the topics and posts.

Just to let you know that I got this back form the hosting company:
"There was a hardware fault on the database server affecting a single partition, causing some data to be unreadable. Only certain databases were affected, there was no impact on the web files or mails which are on different servers. Our technical engineers attempted several times to recover the data but unfortunately the current data was unreadable. The next option was to restore the available data from the backup volume dated mid July."

Thats three months of posts and details lost!
I have asked if they have any other data recovery mechanisms they could use but this looks like they have done all they want to.

Such a pity having been with this company for 10 years.

probably don't need to say..... start a backup system for your board.

also, I would be looking for a new host. they should have had backups for just this type of situation.

sorry,

robert
