"Server Unable to Handle Request"

Post by Digi-WP » Fri Oct 14, 2016 7:40 am

Hi all,

I have a modded/customized forum at cycadfriends.co.za hosted on a Linux server with a South African-based ISP. My knowledge is so limited and I am not a developer nor can I code or find faults by looking at the code :cry: I have been looking for some limited paid support for someone to give our installation a "Sanity Check" and perhaps assist with one or two basic configuration problems. I just cannot find anyone who is willing to provide this type of hands-on support, so I am forced to try and fix it myself.

I know there is the STK and also the possibility of re-installing the entire phpBB instance, but I have several mods installed over the last 5 years and most phpBB files are nowhere near vanilla any more.

Where do I start with this error? It started some time ago when my ISP upgraded the server's PHP version and now it's just out of control, whereby I cannot even change a user's name in the ACP without getting the error message. I've looked at the files on the server and tried restoring several files such as includes/functions.php (which I thought was the problem), but just no luck whatsoever :/

I also have a Wordpress instance on the same server and have deactivated all plugins installed over the last year, but still no changes.

Please be patient with me and don't bite off my head. It is not extremely urgent so unless anyone could advise me about proper support, I will try and fix it myself according to your guidance.

Thank you so much in advance!!!

Have you looked at the server error logs? These should be accessible from your control panel - if you cannot find then then ask your hosts.

I have checked the Error Log but it comes up blank. I will contact the ISP in this regard. I also reported the error to them and they replied with this:
I have checked the server logs for the site cycadfriends.co.za. I could see the errors related to the mod_fcgi parameters. The parameters have been already tweaked to the maximum allowed limit in our shared server.

Please optimize the site as per the below parameters to avoid such errors.

===
IdleTimeout 3600
DefaultMinClassProcessCount 3
DefaultMaxClassProcessCount 7
IPCConnectTimeout 300
IPCCommTimeout 7200
FcgidConnectTimeout 20
MaxRequestLen 24621440
FcgidMaxRequestLen 24621440
===
I am not sure how I can optimize the forum accordingly.

Thank you so much for helping me.

I would not profess to be an expert on server configuration but I suspect that your problem is to do with the resources that are available to you on your shared hosting. It may be a "back door" way of your hosts trying to get you to upgrade your hosting package - perhaps time to look for another host.
