Not Getting Confirmation by Email of New Users

Post by Bill_Thompson » Wed Oct 26, 2016 8:23 pm

I am using 3.0.14 and I am using a few mods. Shall I list them? I am going to start a persuit here to debug a problem I am having and I welcome any input in this process. Please help.

I am not getting a confirmation email when new users sign up for an account. I created a test account to see what a new user would see and a the end of registration, I saw this message:
Image

But the administrative email accout I have never got a message saying that there is a new user.

Please advice.

what type of email account are you using for your board? if gmail or hotmail etc. then you need to be using a email address at your domain like; admin@yourboard.com

if you are trying to use gmail for your board you have to set it up correctly if it will work at all.
there are plenty of posts here about how to do that.

if you are using hotmail or some other type of free email then that could be your problem as they can get sent to spam filters etc.

please show us exactly what your email settings are for the board.

Thank you Robert for your quick reply. Yes, I am using a gmail account for the admin account. So, knowing this, I think it would be easier to find a way to make the gmail account work instead of trying a new user@mydomain.com account. If I created a new account, it would be difficult since I am using the gmail account to log in now. I see the easier course of action would be setting up the gmail account to work with phpbb.

There's quite a lot of information on this board about using Gmail specifically [HOWTO] Gmail with phpBB3 in the 3.0 support forum. See if any of that helps and post back if you have no joy.

Or, as Robert said, use an email at your host's email domain.

yes, using your own email at your hosting account is much easier and faster and less prone to problems than trying to get gmail to work in this.

I will try to do both.

I have found that setting up gmail abilities in PHP has its own difficulties.

I will let this discussion thread know what happens.

I have an admin@thedomain.com email address. How do I set the phpbb to recognize this email address as the one that alerts are sent to when a new user signes up?

go to your admin panel and put it in as the board email address and also as your admin email address.

set your email program or gmail or whatever you use to check email to receive those emails sent from the board so you will see them.

Set it as your email address in the UCP.

I tried to fix the problem I have by setting up the system to allow for a gmail admin account.

First of all, before testing the functionality of adding a new user, I would delete the test account from the phpbb4_users database table.

According to the documentation on "[HOWTO] Gmail with phpBB3", this is the required settings I need to have:

Use SMTP server for e-mail: Yes
SMTP server address: tls://smtp.gmail.com
SMTP server port: 465
Authentication method for SMTP: PLAIN
SMTP username: example@gmail.com
SMTP password: Your Password

Since my web site is hosted with an internet service provider, I asked them to help with making the proper settings during an online chat session.

Once they made the changes, here is what I saw when I typed "my domain"/info.php

Image

These are the only settings I found here for SMTP.

But, then when I went to the admin panel on phpbb I found this under CLIENT COMMUNICATIN -> E-mail settings

Image

Above these lines, on this page there are two options for email address.

Image

I assume that both these email address need to be the same thing.

Now, here is the problem. after making all these changes, the test did not work. The admin email address never got tht notice of a new email account.

So, after this test failed, I switched the email addressed listed adjacent to this to be admin@mydomain.com

Image

I then tested the creation of a new account now using admin@mydomain.com and the test failed? Should I switch the gmail settings back? What should I switch it to?

None of those settings you have above have anything to do with one another.

The image you posted from info.php is the settings within PHP. Those are the settings that PHP uses when you set "Use SMTP" to "No" on the Email Settings page. If you have "Use SMTP" set to "Yes", as you have it, then it will use whatever you have in phpBB's SMTP settings, not those in the PHP settings.

The "Contact Email address" and "Return Email address" have nothing to do with the outgoing Email settings. Those are just used for the From and Reply addresses within the messages themselves. You could put in nobody@example.com for both addresses and it should have no effect on whether the messages are sent or not.

And, as said above, the email will go to the address set in the UCP for the admin account.

I am testing this right now. How long does it typically take to get the email to the admin email after a user registers? I have just registered a new test user.
