What the heck!?

Post by Newfie »

Is this for real!? phpBB 3 is already in Beta stage in 2006!?

Wow! I thought this would end up like Duke Nukem Forever...

I was expecting this to be around 2008 or 2009. You guys are fast! :D

Congratulations on exceeding my (and many others) expectations! :D

I'm pretty sure I'm not asleep or taking bad drugs.

phpBB3 was never vaporware, you could always download and track progress checked into CVS. 8)

Something tells me that phpBB will undergo a new world order of sorts.

Some old-timer phpBB fans might be turned off, while whole new legions of fans come forward, and vBulletin et al might slash prices in response.

That's what it looks like to me. A massive upheaval in the world of phpBB!

Out with the old, in with the new!

I'd bet it's going to be pandemonium! phpBB 2.0 might be ridiculed, phpBB 3.0 parties, this forum should go bananas.

Prepare for the phpBB New World Order!

I'm an old-time phpBB fan (been using it since 1.x.x) and I'm not turned off. Been waiting a looooong time for this. :)
The development team have put a lot of effort and time into this and the fruits of their labour will not go without a hearty hurrah from all the phpBB users.

As I said, we will still support 2.0.x :)

There is no obligation at all to upgrade to Olympus. As you said, some of the changes are quite significant, and some may prefer to continue using 2.0.x, which is fine.

We will be catering to the needs of everyone, whether they use 2.0.x or 3.0.x :)

Oh yes, some of the old-timers would like it.

But consider the 4 possible people that are here:

Person 1: phpBB 2.0 and 3.0 rule!
Person 2: phpBB 2.0 was awesome, but 3.0 sucks
Person 3: phpBB 2.0 sucked, but now 3.0 is awesome!
Person 4: phpBB will suck forever no matter how many versions there are

Person 1 and Person 4 are nothing to be concerned about. The biggest changes would occur between the Person 2 and Person 3 userbases, hence the phpBB NWO.

Person 2 continues to use 2.0.x, we continue to support them.
Person 3 begins, and uses 3.0.x, we support them.

I cant understand why phpbb 3 isnt going to be a paid liscense release.

and just have phpbb 2 left as open source, kind of like what Invision do.

Then phpbb 3 will be a better all round piece of kit

Because the developers will HAVE to get there arse in gear, as its commercial and some big-wig will stand behind them whipping their arses into shape, until there work is finished.

Commercial software is almost always better than open-source, with only one addidtion

That is exactly what they do not want. 8)

Software tastes better when made with love.
