Transfer my site from a free host to a paid host.

Post by elcochino6 » Thu May 17, 2007 7:04 pm

I am trying to transfer my entire forum http://www.ifishct.com from awardspace hosting to computinghost. I have FTP'd all of the files from the awardspace server to my local machine and uploaded them in the same structure to the computinghost server via FTP. I exported the MYSQL database to my local machine using phpmyadmin with no compression, which ended up being named "db5.awardspace.com.sql". I then logged into my cpanel on computinghost, and tried to imort that file using phpmyadmin, and I received this error: #1044 - Access denied for user 'ifishctc'@'localhost' to database 'ifishct_forum'.

How do I go about giving access to the database to the new host? Sorry I am new to MYSQL an PHP, but I wanted to start using a paid host. I tried doing a search before posting this, but I couldn't fnd a definitive answer.

just a couple of questions before we go any further:

Is your forum phpbb2 or phpbb3?

Have you created a database on your new host? Generally you cannot create a database via phpmyadmin you will have to do it via your control panel. Once you have created the database you should be able to inport it.

foum is phpbb3, I have not made a database on the new server, I thought I could just import the whole thing from the old host... Should I make the database on the new server have the same name as the database on the old server?

Thanks for your help!

As it is phpbb3 the quickest, and easiest, way would be to just re install on your new host. That way there is no need to worry about import it.

Sorry to be harsh but there have been enough warnings about using phpbb3 beta versions as live forums. I am sorry to say but you are now on your own with this.

well, I dont feel this question has to do with phpbb3 at all, It is a general mysql/php question for a novice, who is intersted in moving his forum. I am not upgrading or converting, I am simply looking to switch hosts. I appreciate the help, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

How?

It'd be nice to have the resolution posted so anyone who has a similar problem in the future can find it.

From the sounds of it, the user 'ifishctc' didn't have enough (or any) permissions on the new database he'd created. That's a very common mistake in moving most any website with a database, it can usually be rectified with any web-based control panel that accompanies phpMyAdmin with just a few clicks.
