I have a live forum that is currently running on RC4. Yes, I know, I should be keeping up with the updates, but I've not had much time to spend on board stuff in the past few months and I've got behind.
Having seen the problems some people have had with the RC6/7 upgrades, I'd rather just delete the old files, replace them with the latest ones and then perform the database update. Is there any reason why this method wouldn't work? Also, is there a direct RC4-7 update file or will I have to go through the stages 4,5,6,7 one by one? Thanks.

The method you outlined will work fine. Just overwrite everything except config.php and run the database updater.
