I can not use the built in function since that relies on a smtp daemon which I can not install on this server for various reasons. I just don't understand why gmail refuse to accept my valid username and password.

Thank you for the help anyway.

I just wanted to inform that I fixed it. Strangest limitation I've seen but it was the password that contained some non alpha numeric characters. When I changed it to a simpler password it started working directly. :D

I have this problem too! My error log says:

Code: Select all

E-mail error
» EMAIL/SMTP
/forum/adm/index.php

Could not connect to smtp host : 111 : Connection refused

<b>[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice</b>: in file <b>/includes/functions_messenger.php</b> on line <b>979</b>: <b>fsockopen() [<a href='function.fsockopen'>function.fsockopen</a>]: unable to connect to ssl://smtp.gmail.com:465 (Connection refused)</b><br />
Same as many people here. Tried also with tls://.. port 587 and so on.

My hosting service is on godaddy. But I have all my e-mails (4 four different purposes) working with gmail (googleapps). I tried with godaddy email and it worked right away. But I want to use gmail server for the reasons explained before.

I called godaddy service and they couldn't tell me if fsocketopen() function was on/off or working. They only thing they told me was that I have to make a script about that function to put into my phpbb email script...
I don't really think so. But I don't really know.. anybody know if that's true? Or any way around this?

At first my e-mail was working with phpbb mail function, but for some reason it was taking up to hours to receive it, and sometimes it would never arrive.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Dear all,

I am trying to set up the mailing option in phpBB3 with gmail, but I don't get it working.

Using localmail, a registration mail is sent to the registering user (but not to admin), but massmailing does not yield results [account activation via admin].

When enabling smtp, using various options and combinations (even the ones that are not supposed to work) LOGIN/PLAIN, TLS/SSL, 465/587, tls://gmail.google.com, ssl://gmail.google.com, smtp.googlemail.com. Obviously having username@gmail.com as username and the proper password. Next, using phpinfo I can see openssl available:

Code: Select all

OpenSSL support enabled
OpenSSL Library Version OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
OpenSSL Header Version OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
I am trying to send mails via mass mailer (to myself) which gives the following error in the errorlog (for all options tried)

Code: Select all

/phpBB3/ucp.php

Er kon geen verbinding worden gemaakt met de smtp-host : 111 : Connection refused

Errno 2: fsockopen(): unable to connect to ssl://smtp.gmail.com:465 (Connection refused) at [ROOT]/includes/functions_messenger.php line 1001
Does anyone have any suggestion on how to fix this?

Regards

Tom Gruintjes

Check with your host to see if those ports aren't blocked.

godaddy , like many hosts, do not allow outgoing email to go through there servers unless it is originating on their servers.

what that means is that you need to setup a email account in your godaddy hosting control panel for your board.

put that email account in your email settings for the board.

now, you should be able to say no to smtp and let the godaddy server handle all the board's email for you without all these problems trying to use some free email account.

that is one of the things you pay for when you buy hosting, the email server that comes with it.

not sure why so many people try to use free email services like gmail for something like their own board etc.

it shouldn't but if it does then you should contact godaddy about that. it is their servers.
as long as you are creating an email like: you @ yourdomain.com and that domain name is hosted on godaddy's servers then the email should go through as fast as it would anywhere else. it actually should work better than using gmail because it would have to be relayed through godaddy's server before it goes to the gmail servers before it starts on it's way to the receipient.

I live in India. Our Toll free number is not working today. So, I dropped a mail to them regarding the issue.
Let's see what will they reply.
Btw. I have seen some plans of godaddy. All referring to nuber of relays.
Can you explain me what's that?

ps:
My forum will require atleast 1000 mails per day for user-subscribed notifications
What do you suggest?

have no idea what that means for godaddy's plans

if you are going to be doing that many emails a day, then you will probably need to get a separate mass email server and software to handle it. I really doubt that godaddy will ever allow that many emails a day, certainly not with a normal hosting plan.
