long conversion in progress

Post by 114211 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 2:02 am

it's been in "conversion in progress" for about two hours now, the sql database is 203 megs though. It hasn't really timed out though, it's still loading in firefox. Should I just let it go or try the step again?

this is upgrading from the latest 2 version to 3

I'm in the same boat, and I'm at step 16 and need to keep pressing the Continue button to keep it going. I need to go out and turn my computer off. Can I bookmark the URL for the current step and come back and carry it on later?

I don't think so..

Hey is there supposed to be a progress bar or something while it is converting?

Hmmm, well there seems to be enough info in the url to determine how far it's got:

Code: Select all

http://local.dmforum3/install/index.php?mode=convert&sub=in_progress&tag=phpbb20
&current_table=15&skip_rows=46350&language=en
Pretty sure I should be able to bookmark that and come back to it later, after all once it finishes a bunch of rows and is waiting for a press of Continue, the only thing it's waiting for is for you to tell it to start the next batch of rows.

Actually, I'd have to do a view source and grab the URL from the ACTION of the FORM to get the next screen. I don't see any reason why that won't work?

Any one have any thoughts on the matter? I had no idea it was going to take this long and I only wanted to test out the conversion from v2.0, but my DB is 220MB... :(

What step are you at? I'm at step 16 which is "Filling table phpbb_posts:" and I've been clicking continue for the last two hours -- it's not much fun... I'm not looking forward to the search match phase, that's a table with 55MB in it... :o :o

There seems to be many threads about it this so cut and paste from my reply here:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 5#p3435305
The system is very unintuitive, in my opinion and should be more user friendly. I found this thread when doing a google search for "phpbb3 step 16" as I was under the impression that the upgrade was hanging on step 16. What it is doing, though is only running a certain amount of rows at a time before you need to click "Continue conversion". Doing this numerous times and having it still stay on step 16. The process did not automatically refresh and continue through my 40k+ rows of posts.

If anyone feels they're hanging on step 16, jot down or remember what row it first said it was skipping. ie:
skip_rows = 1023
When you do 'Continue conversion' make sure the number is different (and higher) so you know it's not a matter of hanging at a certain step.
It only does about 8000 rows at a time in 2000 row batches. (2000 x 4). I had 90k+ rows in my posts table alone and that took me a couple of hours. There doesn't seem to be a meta refresh like there is between steps.

It's the fact you have to keep clicking continue that's the killer. And for the record, mines only doing about 600 rows at a time. :-(

There's got to be some way of automating this, surely? I can't sit at home for a whole day clicking continue! As it is, I'm only testing out the conversion on a local server. I'll have to do it all again for real at some point...!

Can anyone advise if the conversion process also converts the search match table? Because that is over 1.6 million rows and I'll probably be dead before the conversion finishes... :? thanks

Phew, it's done. Search match words are ignored. Took six hours altogether.

The process definitely needs to be improved though and a better warning given to users. Simply saying "this will take some time" is not really detailed enough. There must some some rough guide that equates to 100MB DB will take 3 hours, 200MB will take 6 -- this should be added into the instructions.

It also needs to be made more clear that the process needs to be monitored and that you'll need to be clicking a button to keep it going as that's really not obvious in the setup introduction IMHO.

There can be no rough guide. It depends on the board in question, its settings, the server ,...
For instance, many users with remote avatars will slow things down, regardless of the number of posts. There is no feasible correlation between size and conversion duration; for instance I just converted a 300MB database in well under 1 hour, but I know that it can take far longer.
Rule of thumb: do it on a server you control and where you can make sure that no timeouts happen. For instance on your own desktop.

Kellanved, is there nothing that can be done to automate the process? It's very tedious to sit there clicking next over and over.
